How much is not risking big stack at table worth or slim +EV vs stack considerations How much is not risking big stack at table worth or slim +EV vs stack considerations

I was going to post this in no stress topic, but I'm wondering what people think about this topic specifically.

Hand in question, 1/2 $300 max buyin. I have like $550 and cover table. Game is passive with almost no 3-betting.

H straddles button to $5. AKo

V is unknown with $250 open raises to $12 UTG. 2 callers, I squeeze to $55. V quickly shoves. I range him to TT+/AK and fold. He shows 88.

I know my EV if I had called would have been about $35, but even if I had perfect information, is that EV on a single max variance hand worth giving up the big stack at the table.

This may be results oriented but about an orbit later, I stacked V with A8s. I raised on button, he called. Flop Q85r (1 spade). He bets flop I call. Turn 8. He bets pot, I raise 1.5x he jams I call and stack him w/ KQ.

So you don't try and stack him now so that you can try and stack him later?
If doesn't matter if you have well over the table max if no one else does as you're limited by the effective stack of everyone else.

And for the stack size differences you mention, I don't think that it matters. Take your +EV spots and move along with life imo.

I'd say yes, because we are supposed to think about EV as a looooong term thing not a vacuum thing.

to be clear, the yes is to the Q, 'is the single max variance ev hand worth giving up the big stack?' yes,we are supposed to take best long term ev action.

What advantage does having the big stack at the table give you? Maybe that's the first thing we should address.

The problem to me, beginner, is whether we are calling a shove from an unknown.

This is not a +ev spot until we gathered some evidence that it's the case, no?

no it is not worth 35$ in ev (at 1/2) to maintain a big stack. not even close.

The hand is like $2/5 with the button straddle, so villain's $12 raises is a little suspect and hints at a lack of awareness. Unless hero has a spewy lag image, this is a fold. A lot of $1/2 villains aren't even 4 bet shoving JJ or TT.
Villains that shove 8s in this spot at $1/2 usually go broke pretty quickly anyways (like this one did). Lucky that you got his money and not someone else.
