I am not saying that "auto-piloting" is some easy task; I'm just saying that when you are 12+ tabling the information provided to you by your HUD is going to be more accurate and relevant to you than any read you think you may have and your decisions will be based on the numbers more often than the "reads", hence the reason we base +EV plays or -EV plays on our opponents VPIP, AgFq, etc etc. Last, if you do not believe there is some sort of "auto-pilot" play going on I suggest a trip to the online sub-forums. I am sure you will notice all the "standard" situations and "best line" strategy and discussion. (I am not telling you personally to go there and look as I know you already do, I'm speaking in general to anyone).
I think we're in agreement in general. I should say that of the over 14,000 players I have stats on at 50nl, there are 26 that I have over 2,000 hands. Therefore most of the time, I'm playing the stats unless they do something unusual. However, for those 26, I've taken the time (off line) to look at how they play hands and will play them differently based on what I've seen in their play if there is a variation from what I expect from their stats. The group isn't large, but come up frequently enough to have separate notes on them.
As one moves up, there are less random players and more regulars. Eventually, one has to know what the specific weaknesses of the regulars are to continue to win. In this way, it becomes more like live over time where the pool of regulars is much smaller in total, but not in %.
