While A9 is theoretically a strong hand HU, it does not fair that well vs typical calling ranges of an 8x raise. It also doesn't play that well on many boards. Such a large raise will often put you in a Way Ahead / Way Behind spot even if you flop top pair (whether it is an Ace or a 9).
Regardless of all that, at this level A9ss plays far better in multiway pots. We are going to flop great so seldom that I would rather put as little money as possible to see a flop. When we do flop great I want to make sure that dominated hands are still in the pot. The last thing I would want to do is push out K5ss or 97off type hands out of the pot preflop with a large raise.
I'm totally on board with overlimping (it's my default play here). I mentioned to OP in the chat thread that when going thru a rough patch / not in a great poker frame of mind due to downswing / etc. to play preflop so as to setup easier postflop situations. Overlimping here will typically set up a much easier postflop situation than raising, imo.
