Got myself in a confusing spot a little while ago. I could have avoided it easily had I paid more attention, I floated the flop thinking I would be HU against villain 1 and I didn't notice villain 2 had called.

On the turn I was completely unsure whether to check or bet. I couldn't think of any fantastic reasons for either so I just checked back for pot control and the free card but I think this may have left me no chance to bluff the river.

River not too thin?

Didn't have any good history with villains.
Villain 1 was middle aged half decent but pretty nitty.
Villain 2 had been there 20 minutes. Seemed loose passive.

Its pretty thin. I don't think anyone has a J though... so you're probably fine. No-one with J is going ch/ch on the last two streets. However, this is not a value bet IMHO. I don't see anyone looking you up without at least a better 8. Loose passive guy easily could be playing A8 type hands and willing to call a stab.

Bottom line... I say check through. You have good showdown value and the hands that call you (TT, 99, A8) almost all have you beat.

There's probably some value in showing down your flop float as well.

what do you mean by having value in showing down my float? Metagame? I don't think I can give villains enough credit for them to be considering history like this

If you are going to float that flop, I would bet the turn when checked to. As played betting river is fine if you think you can get called by worse.
