SB is loose passive (58/17/1.0) sample is small 700 hands. I ve seen him donk middle and top pair in this session.

5/TLHE Cereus 7 handed I am HJ w/ KK.
UTG raises, 1 fold, HJ 3bets, CO fold, BTN folds, SB Calls, BB Folds, UTG calls.
3 see the flop, pot is 5 Big Bets.

Flop: 9h Ad Jh.
SB donks, UTG calls, HJ calls

Turn:4d 6.5 Big Bets
SB bets, UTG folds, HJ call

River: Jc 8.5 Big Bets
SB bets, HJ?

I been thinking i should have raised the flop, bet turn and check the river.
Any thoughts on this?

In the situations where you saw him donk flop w/ middle pair: Were they in multiway pots or hu? Did he ever donk A-high or K-high boards with less than topair? Does he donk draws?

raise flop, check or check/call turn(if he continues to donk lead), check or check/fold river(if he fires river).

as played call the river and hope to see busted hearts. vs this opponent on this board you should probably raise the flop.

You could have played it differently, but at the same time, I really don't think that the way you played it is wrong. I would call down, and hope to see QT, or a heart draw, but if he had an ace or a jack, I wouldn't think a second thing about this hand.

These kinds of hands happen all the time and I shake my head every time. Basically, it's gambling.

Either he has it or he doesn't. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they don't have it and then they get it.

I've often wondered how I would fair if I folded everytime in this spot. Would I come out ahead?

Ex: you raise 66, one caller. Flop 99K. Villain bets into you. Would you better off folding here all the time? Sometimes villain is betting a 9 or a K or a draw or an Ace high, or 77 88, or a smaller pair.

Really, it's gambling, but I"m starting to think that there might be value in just folding but I'm not sure.

Anyhow weigh in?

I think it all depends on the game you are playing at, the Villan/s you are playing against and the history you have with them. I know games if you do that you will get run over time after time. imo.

There's a simple way to do the calculation. Take that VPIP of 58%, translate it into the top 58% of hands. Look at how many of them are Jx, how many are Ax, and how many are QT (pokerstove ftw). Factor in a discounted 10-15% for weird stuff like KQ, look at your equity and proceed. Against a loose passive, you can get away with raising flop, betting turn, and checking river. Against an aggressive opponent, you'll get b/3b by strong draws and will still be in the dark with your underpair.

You'll prob also want to look at what his cold-call 2 bets percentage is.
