for the record, I do think I played this hand bad

normal 4/8 table, SB is a young loose player who likes to splash the pot, MP1 is a calling station, button worries me the most b/c he's more on the tight passive side

hero is posting BB, first hand at the table and looks down at 8T
3 MP players call, C/O calls, button calls, SB calls, hero checks (7 SB)

flop (7 players) = 4710
SB bets, hero raises, 2 MP players and button coldcall, SB completes (17 SB)

turn (5 players) = Q
SB checks, hero bets, MP1 calls, MP2 folds, button calls, SB folds (11.5 BB)

river (3 players) = K
hero checks, MP1 checks, button bets, hero folds

So my main dilemma was "can I actually be ahead on the turn often enough to justify a bet"

All comments great.

Let's see... an overcard diamond falls after you get coldcalled by three people on the double diamond flop... I would c/f here pretty much 100%, and the majority of the time on the river if the turn got checked through. The river would have to be a T or non-diamond 8 for me to even consider b/f or c/c. I don't know if that's nitty; let's see what others have to say.

I think that you can raise or fold the flop. You have 5 passengers behind you, and the board is on the coordinated side. OTOH, the pot is decent and your pressure should let you know where people are at if they call.

Turn, c/f. Given the action, you aren't ahead now if you were on the flop.

I probably just fold a marginal top pair here on the flop when the SB bets. As played the Qd is a pretty awful card and given the action on the flop, it's pretty safe to C/F.

On the flop, I often call. However, I'm watching my opponents behind me intently because I might fold the turn if anyone breathes at the pot or I might raise if the SB bets again. If I call the flop and someone raises behind me, I might fold the flop or I might call with the intention of folding the turn unimproved.

Given the description of the table, no matter what I hold, I probably never make a raise with the intention of knocking out people behind me, but I may raise for value.

flop play is standard, don't listen to the nits. I would certainly check/fold the turn. After getting that much action on the flop, your hand was not looking good already, and one of the worst cards in the deck came off.
