Having played so little live relative to online, I'm often at a loss when looking for tells. I feel like I'm missing the forest for the trees. I bought Caro's book back in the day but found it hard to follow. Are there any good foundational tips to build on when looking for tells?
I'm going to step in here. I don't look for anything specific, it is different for everyplayer. When it is my turn to act, i just try to remember to look left, and make a guess as to what the players on my left are going to do. I find that as a session goes on, I get better and better at making guesses. Sometimes you will notice something specific, that a player will do, maybe something with his hands, his cards, or his chips. Before you really act on it, make sure you have at least a couple of samples to confirm that what you see wasn't just a random event.

I would move up as soon as you feel comfortable. It's a cop out answer but it's right. I doubt there's any difference in the games so the issue should almost entirely be your ability to double your dollar volatility and your confidence.

Depends how much you play. But I would say doubtful if you're playing 1/2 now.

Not seriously, but yeah. Usually dumb rotation home games. I did play 15/30/45 Stud at Borgata with Mostsmooth (what happened to him? he was awesome) for a night and that was pretty fun. Thing is, how often is non-stud spread, and how miserable are stud players overall. Not good things.

I use to play the $10-$20 half kill to $15-$30 two way Omaha 8/Stud Eight game with Mike (Mostsmooth) every weekend at the Taj in 2004-2005. He would usually call me at some ungodly hour to tell me how great the game was. He would also have a few beers in him at the time. Mike loved those asian ladies...lol

I have no idea what happened to him.

I think the night I met Avid (Matt) and you, Mike (Mostsmooth)was at our $6-$12 or $10-$20 game at the Borgata.

For all those reading this, Dave is a very classy dude.
He took Matt (Avid) and I to Noodles of the World at the Borgata and put the dinner on his Amex platinum card, balla style.

Hope all is well Dave.

Haha. Great to hear from you Mike. Remember the Vietnamese coffee?

How and when did you know you were a good player and not just a luckbox? (Or, more importantly, how does one know they're not just a luckbox?)

I was a very, very small part of SS in the heydey and I couldn't (and still can't) hold a candle to the rest of you. And you still gave me the biggest epiphany in my poker experience with one sentence on river play. So, you got that going for you.

if someone gave you $500 and the only rule you have is that it must be wagered on a gambling activity until it is quadrupled or lost, what would you play?

I honestly don't remember exactly -- it was something about river play and allowing your opponent to play perfectly by checking instead of value-betting marginal hands. It's more the eureka moment that I remember and the general concept. I may see if I can dig it up in the archives.
