I've played hold'em maybe 2 times in the last three years, so I'm totally rusty. This hand bothered me.

10 handed limit. First time I sit down at the table, just a few orbits.

Guy limping with about 40% of his hands open limps in middle position.
Tighter player raises on the button, I am thinking he might raise a little looser to isolate the weaker player.
I call with 98o in the Big Blind. (I am thinking that I am getting 5 to 1 with good relative position to the raiser)

FLOP comes Q 9 7 rainbow
action goes I check, weak player checks, button preflop raiser continuation bets, I raise, weak player folds, button calls.

TURN is an Ace so board is Q 9 7 A
I hate the turn card cause I think an Ace is in a huge part of his range. But I check call the turn and check call the river (a deuce). In retrospect I feel like the check call, check call line sucks....

and that betting the turn is superior to that. If I bet maybe I get a better hand to fold and if I get raised I can safely fold thus saving me from calling a river bet.

But then again I think I'm pretty behind his range now with the Ace on board even with 5 big bets going into the turn. So maybe I should check fold the turn?

So questions... you guys folding 98o in this situation preflop?
and what is your line on the turn?

And anything else you think is horrible about this hand. Thanks.

I prob fold pre-flop, but I think a call is not terrible.
The flop is played fine IMO.
I fold turn. 6BB in the pot. You have marginal odds to improve and what hands do you beat? 88-, KJ

I think you need to tell us what limit this is, or at least what the button is like.

Preflop seems standard to me no matter what limit.

Flop seems standard to me if button is in the least bit aggressive. I'd check-call against opponents who only bet top pair or better.

In my games, I'd bet/fold the turn because players don't semi-bluff raise. But if you're in a game where people do, check-call or check-raise might make sense. I'm pretty sure check-folding is a mistake against aggressive opponents.

The pre flop call is marginal but ok and the call on the flop is fine.

Your thoughts about the A are right on so you should act accordingly and just let the hand go. There are not many hands that he could reasonably raise bft that you can beat. Pick your battles and you w/spit balls vs his cannons is no good.

i would fold pre and bet/fold the turn. might also check/fold the turn depending on how likely or unlikely the button is to fold.
