I have no way to be sure, but I would expect the eSATA 7.2k drive to be faster. I would recommend you install 8.4 and try it. It is a relatively fast and easy process to try and check.
Install it to your laptop like normal, and then uninstall, move the \data folder to your external, and reinstall the software and point to the new \data location.
You may want to install it clean each time though, instead of moving the database. Then you can try importing to an empty DB on the laptop, and then try importing the same files to the new, empty DB on the external.

Turn off Windows Firewall for installing HM and PostgreSQL. Once you get those installed you can add exceptions to the firewall. If you have a 3rd party firewall, uninstall it completely before installing HM/SQL -

To move the DB to the external:
1) Uninstall PostgreSQL from the Windows Control Panel.
2) If you are moving the DB to a different drive/partition, manually cut or copy the \Postgresql\data directory to it's new location.
3) run the command - start > run > cmd >
net user postgres /delete
4) reboot.
5) Install the same version of PostgreSQL as your current DB using these instructions -
http://www.holdemmanager.net/faq/afm...aspx?faqid=177
6) If you have moved/installed your DB to a non-default location, please make sure to change the 'Data Directory' path during the installation.
If you are going to install it clean, the process is the same, except for the copy of the \data folder. If you are installing an empty DB to the external, manually create an empty folder path for \postgresql\8.4\data, and point the installer there so it creates the empty database there.
