What happened to good quality documentaries? What happened to good quality documentaries?

Based on prime-time programming I see from a few major "education" channels, I feel these channels think American viewers aren't receptacles of high quality education. We just seek entertainment which involves small drips of learning wrapped in irrelevant and nauseating reality/bogus content.

Lets take the History channel for instance. Ancient Aliens. I don't even need to explain how ludicrous this show is, airing on a channel claiming to be "historical".

Another show that just baffles my mind is Finding Bigfoot on Animal Planet. Any pseudo-scientific show which has no real proof of existence should be on purely entertainmentesque channel in my opinion. There's a place for purely fanatical entertainment... education channels should not be their realm.

Not sure what I'm talking about? Flip through any education channel's prime-time line-up and really ask yourself, does this belong under this channel? I guarantee you'll be surprised with what you find.

Are we [Americans] that dim as t.v. watchers? Maybe that's the trend Americans are going in. Maybe no one really cares about true science/history anymore. Maybe no one wants to learn about REAL animals of the world (which I find 10x more interesting than watching pure fantasy and ridiculous faux-animal sightings). Maybe none of us really want to learn anything of substance at all? Maybe I'm over-reacting?

I don't think so. We aren't dumb. There are a large audience of us that want to see substance, that want to learn as much as we can in this short life, exiting the dark cave into the bright warming glow of enlightenment. I might be assuming too much of us as a people... or asking too much of my TV. In either case, I'm just unhappy with what educational tv programming has become.

you're wrong.

not that many people want to watch documentaries at preset times so the ratings are lower.

finding bigfoot, ancient aliens, pawn stars, hardcore pawn, hoarders, storage unit auction show- all pull good numbers so they can sell ad time for more.

if you're bitching about documentaries and don't have netflix instant- you're taking in media poorly.

if there is 1 strong genre on netflix it's the documentary section.

cheers.
