Ainsley got another gig, unfortunately. Loved her character.

If you're still enjoying the show in season 5, then you will certainly enjoy it through 6 and 7.

For years, fans wondered why Rob left the hugely successful show. "The truth is, I don't really know where it began to go wrong," Rob says. "The real bottom line is when everybody got a raise and success, and they didn't want to give me one, at the end of the day it was like, 'You know what? This is not right. It's just not right.'"

Rob say he never found out why he wasn't granted a raise, but he has no regrets. "I'm not bitter about it at all," he says. "It was a real learning experience because I want my kids, when they're in something that's cool and lauded and everybody's paying attention and it's the greatest thing that ever happened to them—but if behind the scenes, they're not being respected, they need to leave."
From what I can find.. Lowe was making 75k/ep since the show started. By s3/s4, the others had gotten a pay raise (although still paid less than Lowe). The only exception was Martin Sheen, who went from 100k/ep to 300k/ep.

While I definitely agree with the egomaniac part (his autobiography is painful), he did get hired to TWW with the promise of a lead character. Sheen wasn't even supposed to be a main character, though when he became so instantly popular, the show was re-framed.

I never watched this. So it's worth going back and watching now? Were they allowed to "end" the show or was it just cancelled at some point?

Absolutely! Although if you don't get into it after the first few episodes, then it probably isn't for you (unless you are simply turned off by one female character.. then keep on going).

The show was allowed to end. You start the show ~1 yr into the president's first term and you get to go through the rest of his time in office plus the next presidential election. There is a noticeable dip in quality in season 5, due to Sorkin leaving, but imo it gets better in s6 and better yet for the 7th, and final, season.

Last week I watched The American President for the first time (a Sorkin movie that has some influence on TWW). The movie overall was pretty meh.. but it was great, as a West Wing fan, to see carry over actors (including Sheen as Chief of Staff) and a few carryover ideas (the one that stuck out to me was "the virtue of a proportional response").

It's a pretty light-hearted movie, so I would recommend it for TWW fans.

Oh how I envy you. (marknfw)

Yes, it's worth it. The ending was well done imo..even though I don't think they knew for sure the show wasn't going to come back at the time. Basically it could have gone more seasons but the end of season 7 served as a fine ending point as well.

hmm, didn't realise so many people enjoyed WW all the way to the end. i heard it went downhill fast after the first 2 seasons so that was all i watched... after enjoying house of cards and borgen so much (especially the latter) i have a bit of a political tv drama addiction brewing. guess i'll go back and watch the rest.

Oh my god yes, what's crazy is a vast vast majority of the issues they touch on are still relevant today. Such an amazing show.

season 6 and 7 are my favorite, despite jimmy smits being nowhere near my favorite character. the setting just seemed more entertaining than the white house

Not at all.. season 3 and 4 are excellent, 5 is meh, and 6 and 7 are good. (imo it is something like 2>3>1=4>>7>>6>>>>>5)

That's interesting.. the reason I like 6 and 7 is partly due to Smits, as I think he and a few othes breath a bit of fresh air into the show (similar to what I feel he's doing on Sons of Anarchy.. just a totally different role of course).

6 & 7 are great because Josh is at the forefront, I actually hated whenever they shifted the focus to the White House.

Not sure how to rank every season, but I would go 1=2 >>> everything else, and would place 7 slightly before 6

i tried to watch the first episode of west wing, and i couldn't get through it. it was so bad. i gave it a second try and still couldn't get through it. everyone said how great it was though so i gave it a third try, and then i liked it. i'm not sure when i started liking it, but for sure within the first handful of episodes.

i ended up burning through all 7 or 8 seasons or whatever it is within a few weeks.

my acting teacher is friends with allison janney. she is amazing in showtime's new show masters of sex. i think she is great on ww too as cj cregg

most of the acting and characters on ww are just great. a few are terrible. i can't stand josh lyman. he is so ****ing annoying.

Jimmy Smits is coming?! Holy ****! So he's been in SAMCRO, Dexter and TWW?! That guy is the bomb!

And as for the above post...calling The American President "meh"...makes me sad. I love that movie!

Anyone else hearing rumors of a TWW reboot?

Here is a text I just got:

Quote:
Hearing rumors of a WW reboot, w/your girl Abby running for pres as a Hillary-type, potentially vs Sam Seaborn
And by "your girl Abby" he really means "one of your most hated TV characters of all-time".

Just started what will be a very long, drawn out rewatch. Loved the show, bailed late in Season 6 for life reasons, and have never gone back to watch the last season-plus because I didn't want it to be over. Now, it's been long enough that starting over from the beginning makes sense. 3 episodes in to S1 and really glad I decided to do this.

I originally caught on to the show early in S2, went back and caught up on the beginning later. So, I had the luck of never having to think Mandy was a permanent fixture.

I loved Mandy. Screw everyone!

(I *still* haven't seen Season 7 yet. I just spend all my chill time on the internet, and none of it with the tv on. I'm living with roommates right now, and I'm planning on getting my own place in a few months, and I'm thinking that when I do, I won't even buy a tv.)

Mandy and the president's wife are two of the worst characters in the history of TV, for me.

My wife and I just finished watching the entire run. I think we started in fall of last year, and have probably averaged an episode per night. Watched the last one last night, and got pretty sad--it's quite a time investment and you really do become attached to many of the characters. I haven't read the rest of this thread, so I may be repeating stuff people have already said, but some thoughts (I'll spoiler in case anyone is currently working their way through):
Spoiler:

--Sheen is just incredible in that role, like born to play it. He has a real life moral authority, being a lifelong activist and reputed good guy, that comes through in this role.

--That said, acting-wise, Richard Schiff is my favorite, and Toby is maybe my favorite TV character OAT. The scene where he cries talking to CJ about his brother's suicide is so well done, so carefully and expertly modulated, getting the most emotion from the moment by underplaying it. Schiff does more with his eye movement than most actors do with a hundred page script.

--Thought they kept the writing quality admirably high, despite there being an inevitable dropoff from the solo Sorkin seasons. S7 gets a little predictable and normal TVish, but you felt them trying to wrap up a lot of plot threads, likely anticipating it was the end, so it's easy to give it a pass.

--Knowing about John Spencer's real life death makes watching the heart attack stuff in S6 and 7 pretty difficult. The real life synergy with that is one of the stranger and sadder things in TV history.

--Just an amazing show all around. I agree with OP that it's the GOAT network show, and probably a top fiver.

Response to Clare
Spoiler:

- Agreed. So glad he stayed on full time, rather than the part time character he was going to be originally.

- Toby is a fantastic character. The opening spot in the episode where he figures out Bartlett may not be running for a second term is excellent... just bouncing that ball and you can see the gears in his head running. My favorites of his might be when he and Bartlett go toe to toe.. particularly the moment in the Oval Office leading up to Bartlett firing Toby.
