Looked into the girls room. The wifes cousin stayed in the boys room and presumably he was the one that drilled the hole. (I haven't watched E2 yet)

that's what I thought too, but we're certain it was the girls room, not the mom's room or the living room?

While the detectives definitely acknowledged the hole to one another, they sure didn't respond to it like you'd expect - the uncle would obviously be a prime suspect if they knew he was peeping on his now-missing niece.

But wow was I wrong, everyone involved with writing/ directing S2 shouldn't work again. Honestly was an embarrassment for HBO.

Which is why I have high hopes for S3, HBO is in danger of losing a series even with all the credit they got with S1, they brought in the A team I'd imagine.
Still no return of Fukunaga so no A team IMO. Still though, I'll watch S3 and hope.

The interview with the trashman early in episode 2 was A+.

My perspective. The last 20 mins or so of the S1 finale was pretty cringe. All the god discussion by Rust after he spent the whole season developing this nihilistic persona seemed pretty cheap. Didn't take away the season from my perspective but was pretty lame

Pretty much it. Rust's nihilistic side was largely intellectual, so the fact that his character did a complete about face to theism just based on a purely emotional experience felt like nonsensical pandering. Additionally in terms of the plot the second half of the finale ended up being completely anticlimactic just so they could set up his change. Almost all of the cool intricate symbolism in the previous episodes ended up being pointless (again not unlike Lost).

I still love the season up until that point, and it certainly doesn't take away from one of the greatest nude scenes in the history of cable

Let the wildly speculative plot twist guesses begin.

Spoiler:
Julie Purcell is the 2015 interviewer
Huge stretch since she doesn't look 45

So Hays's memory is kind of faulty, even in 1990. Are we going to find out that his recollection of events isn't accurate at some point?

I’m all in after E1.

Missing kids, creepy settings in flashbacks...even if HBO is just playing the hits, I’m absolutely fine with that.

I like the first two episodes a lot and am looking forward to the rest of the season.

The only minor complaint I have is this season seems very derivative of season 1. The show went back to what works a little too much. However, if it's done well, we'll still get a good show.

It looks good so far, but I'm not a fan of the two detectives doing an overly dramatic raspy voice. It's not Christian Bale as Batman bad, but still unnecessary.

plot prediction (dont click if you want to enjoy this show to its fullest cuz i think theres a 5% chance i nailed this)

Spoiler:
mahershala ali's wife ends up being the baddie.

- she has already confessed to travelling to random cities and pretending to be someone else. she has a sociopath vibe.

- sociopaths prob love the idea of becoming super famous crime novel authors, esp ones that they manufacture

- she preys on the kids with the ****ed up family, finds the ones who are agreeable to getting out of their hellish life and onto something better. when she told mahershala ali she didnt know the kid too well, that was a lie. like he says, assume everything is a lie from the start. she prob knew him for months and was his closest confidant on some deep ****.

- arranges for them to be taken away the week after halloween. uses the puppets as a diversion to make people think its a local neighbor

- as the kids are willingly taken away, she leaves the girl with her white bf and takes the boy by herself (since the boy trusts her). they split up and agree to meet up in the next town over.

- she kills the boy herself. booyah, enough threads to start a wild goose chase. another theory... she prob successfully convinced the 10 year old girl that she killed her brother. thats why she stays hidden all this time. lion king ****.

- some other future **** that will probably confuse the entire town but can easily be explained by it having been committed by mahershala ali's wife

- mahershala ali's daughter peaces out because she suspects her mom was in some way responsible and notices the mom's deep sociopathy.

- the show in 2015 was orchestrated by the daughter, and she wants the big reveal to be that there's now proof that the killer was actually his dead wife

- B O O M

lol, awesome theory Clayton.

Random observation: "hey a crime happened, let's go find the local sex offender and beat the **** out of him for no reason since he's never guilty" feels pretty stale by now.

Yeah that was my immediate thought also after the scene where your first point came up.

Spoiler:
Also shared the thought that Julie Purcell is behind the interview in 2015. As noted above I wanted the interviewer to actually be her, but way too young. And I'm guessing the kid's dad is the one who ends up being wrongfully convicted that "the family" (his parents which we are introduced to) are trying to overturn in 1990

@ Clayton - damn that's pretty good

@goofyballer - yeah that scene was pretty tired. But the only part I was really down on in the two episodes fortunately.

Clayton, I have seen other fan theories that are predicting the same thing but not in as much detail. I kind of wish I hadn't read it because I think you may have nailed it.

additional notes

Spoiler:
she knows that because she's the boy's teacher, a detective is gonna come looking for her. then it's her goal to hook up with detective. gives her an insider view on the investigation and sees ways that she can manipulate it to her liking.

theme of the show is how mahershala is the GOAT tracker but in the face of love he becomes the WOAT tracker.

I liked the first 2 episodes a lot. Agree the interview with the junk collector was by far the best scene. The mother coming home was great as well.

Yeah it's a copy of S1 but so far it feels fresh enough for me that it does not bother me.

Comments about the theories though I do not understand why we need to put them in spoilers

Spoiler:
I really hate the theories that the wife or interviewer have anything to do with it. I think the interviewer will be totally unrelated. She's way too young and her question about racism seems so confusing & unnecessary if that was a twist coming up.

The wife seems a bit more likely but it still seems incredibly farfetched. I hope it's not true tbh. And I was someone who actually liked the "Marty is the yellow king" theory. I fear I would hate this.

interviewees question about racism feels pretty much on spot with her character which would be privileged OG-SJW taking a full swing at institutional racism in backwood country.
