For the first 4 episodes I thought it was set in 2008 - someone had a flip phone, Bezzerides' sister was a camgirl, there was something else that made it seem slightly old (I know camgirls still exist, but I think this sort of thing was bigger years ago). Was disappointed when it wasn't.

Period pieces have all kinds of budget challenges - I wonder.

I wonder what OOTV would say about this season if the first season never happened, and if we weren't expecting HBO quality.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this was great TV, but it'd be more accurate to call it "mediocre" instead of "awful".

Expectations were just so high.

They wouldn't say anything because no one would watch it. The thread would be like 20 posts long

The "dude wracked by his Iraq/Afghanistan misdeeds" thing was a lot bigger of a deal in 2008.

Whenever it was set, it is weird that they totally abandoned the major story-telling conceit of TD1 in exchange for adding more characters, and I hope they bring back the multiple timeline thing in some fashion.

Season 3 should be an Adaptation ripoff chronicling Pizzalotto's slow descent into madness, driven by the season 2 reviews.

Local resident working as a maid at resort loses her aunt after aunt was taken by Canadian couple and resort host for private time-share tour.

retired True Detective now working as a flashy bartender at resort gets on the case and discovers that Town - councilman found a pirate treasure years ago and that he is getting blackmailed by resort because they have pictures of him socializing with the cabana boy.

because everyone involved in the conspiracy is from old money and connected to the Resort, True Detective realizes the futility of the mission. He abandons the investigation, but it inspires him to invent the new cocktail called "the flat circle."

The flat circle is such a hit True Detective bartender gets hired for the secret Cougar party. He discovers the missing aunt actually is now a resort executive in charge of the time share operation.

Fearing that his cover has been blown as he transforms into the True Detective, he blasts his way out of the party dropping a dozen bodies. He gets away to his Dodge Charger and takes a 2 mile cross-island drive where the bad - guys henchmen have set an ambush.

TD hides behind a coconut tree and after dropping 10 of the henchman with a slingshot, he realizes his number is up. He gazes up through the palm fronds, collects himself, and jumps out to meet his fate.

TDIII.

the writing was so awful that TD3 might have issues getting good talent to commit to another terrible season. I wish there was behind the scenes footage of the lead actors on set doing some of these terrible scenes

I think they actually used all the footage already.

I'd like to see a TD set in Las Vegas, with David Mamet and Curtis Hanson directing key episodes and helping write them.

The plot could be about solving the murders of a few notorious gamblers/poker players who are known or rumored cheaters/scammers.

Some of the cast could be:

Chiwetel Ejiofor and Hilary Swank as detectives
Brendan Gleeson - chief
Ricky Jay - playing twin characters; one who is a murder victim, the other a retired magician
Margo Martindale - the madam
Method Man - Da pimp
Maya Kazan, Alma Jodorowsky and Oona Chaplin - part of the stable

Zara Larsson - backup singer
Jessica Brown Findlay - dancer/singer
Elsa Husk - show girl
Val Kilmer - Casino president/ former marker manager
Danny DeVito - show producer
Joe Mantegna and/or Danny Aiello - retirees

Kim Bassinger/Tobey Maguire/Werner Herzog can make cameos.

Michael Shannon - villain

and Rebecca Pidgeon - obligatory role

Mamet "help" write? If we're getting David ****ing Mamet on board I think keeping pizzalotto in the writers room would be a mistake

Pizzalotto has done great work in the 21st century, unlike David Mamet.

I liked Heist and Spartan a lot. Red belt was kind of a strange film, I enjoyed it though. Not terribly ambitious but it accomplished what it set out to do IMO

David Mamet has a really soft spot in my heart because he will just unabashedly do projects to get paid and no other reason. You want me to adapt Hannibal? Ok can I do it pseudonymously? Nice! You want me to produce and write a mediocre CBS drama starring president Palmer as leader of a paramilitary unit? BACK UP THE MONEY TRUCK!
