It is pretty stupid that past dishes/competitions don't factor in to whether or not you are going to be "top chef".

I get what you are saying but surely they do to get you that far. I don't ever recall someone just sneaking their way to the final luckily. The show seems to get it right. Also, think the judges do (against the "rules") use past performance sometimes in how they critique the current challenge.

I like Adrienne's arc as an argument against this. She would probably have one of the worst full season results of any winner, but I think she legitimately improved and found her identity as a chef during the season. There have also been chefs who definitely declined during the competition.

The New York Times made a really well-done video on Adrienne a couple years ago that is pretty interesting to watch now. Seems like she's answering a lot of the questions she had about herself and her future. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=undnQA4so6w

iirc, in early seasons they would openly weigh a chef's past performance at judge's table, and other incidentals as well. The official rule of being judged solely on that challenge is more recent, and obviously gets disregarded to some degree. Humans aren't capable of being that impartial even if they try.

Interesting disclaimer at the end of this week's episode, saying judges discuss their decisions with the producers and that Bravo network has a say. Perhaps they show that disclaimer every week but I never noticed it before. Certainly makes you think that, at the very least, the judges aren't the sole arbiters of who goes home... it is in the network's interest to keep the more interesting personalities around.

I don't think there is any doubt that the black mixed race chick who has "found herself" through the competition is a lock over fat whitey guy.

that's not how i remember it. pretty sure tom has always made a big deal about judging only on that night's dish. curious how others remember earlier seasons.

I could definitely be wrong about that. Anybody else have memories of the early years? I think I started watching the show around S3.

From the first episode it was obvious that the producers just put through whoever they wanted and you guys looking for rule clarification is a little bit adorable.

this is an interesting read. for example i had no idea that on the episode we just watched, every chef from the season is there cooking. that makes complete sense, i just never considered it.

solid finale.
surprised by the winner, imho the general judges feedback sounded better for adrienne. joe's meat in the 3rd dish seemed to have the biggest error.

I was very surprised too. Seemed Adrienne would win in a landslide.

i actually thought joe would win because of how much the judges seemed to praise adrienne's dishes....classic reality show editing rope-a-dope.

but i thought adrienne should win because IMO goofing up the protein your main course should be 5x as bad as pretty much any other goof in any other course.

It felt really close and I wanted to eat all the food. Was pulling for Adrienne but I think either was a cool/worthy champ.

Have to chuckle at the "producers rig it" conspiracy theorists ITT... there's no way the producers wanted Joe to win. But the show really is about the food, and I'm glad that is what informed their final choice. I hope Adrienne comes back for another season at some point.

not saying the producers rig it, just saying the scenes are intentionally eddited to make you think one thing is going to happen when in the end something else does.

it is rare that a reality show of any kind is edited in a way that leads the audience to think they know exactly what is going to happen before it happens.

Oh yeah, I was talking about someone a few posts back who mentioned that "the producers put through whoever they wanted." I probably should have quoted but got lazy.

The editing is definitely something they do and I don't really have a problem with it. Just have to watch it with a grain of salt. Especially in a finale, they're rarely going to make it clear who won.

+1. She also was giving off the feeling that her cooking could really start to take off in a big way. It would be pretty cool to see her come back even stronger ala CJ or Blais.

As it is, aren't we overdue for a pure all-stars season again? We've had the lone one with some past contestants sprinkled in.

Good season, liked the Colorado setting and almost all the chefs seemed like very cool, nice people. Food seemed solid but not spectacular. No chefs stood out to me as particularly amazing or groundbreaking. Didn't really care who won the finale, liked them both and they seemed pretty equal talent-wise. Made it a little anti-climactic, but still enjoyable.

Didn't think it was possible but Padma looked even better this season.

Adrienne will be brought back regularly in some manner to show how she has "grown". Joe will be forgotten obviously.
