It really grabs you from the beginning. I do think The Shield struggles at times during the second and third seasons. But it gets better in the fourth and then I think the fifth season is the greatest season of any TV show ever, and I've seen all the best. Sixth season is a bit of a set-up season, and then the seventh is just the greatest final season of any long-running show. There's no show that has ever made me sit on the edge of my seat with anticipation and a pit in my stomach like The Shield.

I watched the first episode of The Shield because of this post. I will not watch another. Child molester #1 is easily tricked into giving up name of pedo #2. With a tight time frame Chiklis is allowed to torture #2, the supposedly super smart and shrewd Dr.#2 gives into the torture quickly. Too unrealistic for me to give the series a chance.

txdome, expert on the child molester thought process.

Expert on ****ty tv writing. This guy is "too smart" to be turned mentally. So Chiklis beats the S out of him and then he gives up the goods? That is something a you would see in a summer action hero movie.

I agree w/ txdome somewhat, though I did absolutely love the shield the first 3-4 seasons. Midway through the second-to-last season the sloppy writing / lack of believability / sensationalism got to me and I quit without watching the last one.

My recs based on the shows you reported liking: Mad Men, Rome (2 season, 26 eps long hbo series about Cesar era ancient rome, very much enjoyed it), Treme (imo a great show from wire creator with really authentic and likable characters, can be really slow at times though), Men of a Certain Age (very underrated and under appreciated show again with genuine and likable characters, 24 eps I believe aired and it's finished its run), Parenthood (surprisingly good major network drama from creator of fnl and starring Nate from 6FU).

Edit: Also while people are giving rec's, any input into what drama series that I haven't yet watched that I should tackle next, Deadwood, FNL, Firefly, or West Wing?

Add'l relevant info: I already watched S1 of deadwood many years ago and remember liking it but not loving it. Scifi is not my fav genre, though I am capable of really enjoying well-done scifi stuff like the latest jj abrahams star trek movie. All other things being equal, I would like to have fewer eps to have to get through. My favorite series are the ones I rec'd above, with mad men being my fav one and the rest of my top five being filled the other big ones always cited on here -- Six Feet Under, Wire, Breaking Bad, Sopranos

If you want something fairly short and easy just watch Firefly. I'm not into scifi at all and I quite enjoyed it.

Also, since you like SFU and Parenthood you should check out Sports Night, which also features Peter Krause. And if you like Sports Night, you will love The West Wing.

So, you missed out on the best final season in the history of television? Congratulations on your good decision making. And you loved the first 3-4 seasons, when 5 and 7 were by far the best of the show.

I second Dexter, Lost, and The Shield. Also check out Jericho, it only went for 1.5 seasons but it's worth a watch. If you like cop shows NYPD Blue is a must.

Definitely. I'll admit I was getting kinda fed up with The Shield towards the end as I'd absolutely caned watching it but the last season blew me away.

Can only speak to what I have seen, but West Wing has some of the best individual episodes of any series I have ever seen. It is rare that a TV show can move me to tears, but it did on more than one occasion.

Friday Night Lights is less dramatic at times and the plotlines are centered around mostly much younger characters so they get into different situations. Either one the acting and writing is excellent for the most part.

So far we are totally hooked on The Shield btw, thanks to all for the recommendation.

I'd like to recommend The Shield, even though you're already watching it.

Yeah, I've heard it from many other people whose opinion I respect that the final season was outstanding and I guess I'll watch it at some pt. I didn't necessarily think season 5 or 6 were any worse than the earlier seasons (if 5 was the forrest whitaker season you are right that it was actually probably the best of the first six from an objective standpt) just that the repetitive nature and utter lack of believabilty of the show progressively grated on me to the point where I no longer cared enough about it to watch by the end of season 6. After have watched stuff like The Wire, SFU, and Sopranos by the time the later seasons were airing, it just started seeming very one dimensional.
