I thought the monologue was a clever bit, that played off Vaughn's natural charm and made good use of the energy of broadcasting something live, but it dragged on a little too long.

History of Punk sketch was one of the better things they have done all year.

watching now... I can't express how awful Vanessa Bayer is in words. She is one of my least favorite cast members of all time easy.

Turned it off after Californians. Anything worth watching after that?

One day, NBC will be able to make a 'Worst Of' collection of SNL just out of this year's episodes.

You missed Target Lady. So the answer to your question is 'no'.

I gave each sketch 30 seconds, then ended up fast forwarding almost all of them. No bueno. Date with 6th graders got a little bit longer because Cecily looked hot.

I liked the openening monologue, but I'm always a sucker for "back stage" view of the show. I really liked the Mothers Day commercial for flowers. Kate McKinnon nailed the Mom character.

Also really liked the Disney show where Mom was a Korean water ghost. That may have been because I just watched that movie Mama the other day.

Almost every returning character sketch got a fast forward. I made it through the Californians hoping for the funny that never showed up.

Cecily and Nasim both looking good this week.

So, did everyone else find the cold opener creepy? I think it's a bit too soon to be making jokes about that kidnapper/rapist. That thing happened just a week ago. I'm not one to be easily offended or to get that self-righteous, but that was way too crass for me. The audience didn't find it funny, either. I'll get off my high-horse now.

I've never found Kristen Wiig funny.

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I feel like The Californians is really the only recurring bit they've come up with in years that is actually funny most of the time.

It's kind of a variation on the sketch they tried out a few times with the Wasp-y Bethesda, MD couple.

I think the first time it ran it was hilarious, and then another time when they first did the multiple close up pans to Bill Hader and Fred Armisen. The rest of the time it's usually just whatever for me.

What do these two things have to do with one another? Reading through last few pages I don't think anyone even mentioned Park and Recs.

Well Conz is right... Park and Recs is a funny show. One of the best on TV right now. I just didn't see why you felt the need to bring it up here.

Don't you usually go to the Park and Recs thread and **** up that thread too?

Yeah sometimes. It's not funny. Looking at the camera is not a joke. Riding Tina Fey's coattails and coasting on a clone of a clone (the office - the office) doesn't make a good show. At all.

Interesting it's okay to bash SNL in the SNL thread, but in your eyes you can't bash P&R in any thread?

How much of the blame for the quality of SNL do you think is on the writers as opposed to the actors? I've been networking with some people there recently, and would love to get my foot in the door there as a writer.

You misunderstand me.

Bashing SNL in the SNL thread where others have come to talk about SNL is the proper way to do it.

The same holds true for Park and Recs... If you want to bash it, go to the Park and Recs thread and bash away. **** it up all you want. Most there like the show and will stick up for it. But at least you would be in the correct thread.

Seth is taking over for Fallon when he takes over for Leno. Hoping John Mulaney takes over for Seth as WU anchor and head writer. Could be the beginning of a decent era.

go back and read all my replies in this thread (you won't, i don't expect you to) I'm an SNL fan, and always have been. Most people use extreme hyperbole with this show. I tend to be fair i think. if a sketch sucks, it sucks, but I give them credit all the time. ... just not a Vanessa Bayer fan. her latina maid in the Californians is one of the worst performances on the show, not even in a "it's suppposed to be bad" kinda way

I feel like the majority of the blame is w/ the writers right now. While this cast is missing a superstar, there are enough quality players that it should be funnier.

Def the writers. They suck. Actors are decent but not good enough to overcome the material. There are a perhaps a few mediocre sketches that could be funny with better actors, but you would need past legendary cast members or their equivalent to pull it off.

The actors also have a part in writing the sketches I think, and definitely in creating characters, so it's hard to say.

Personally, I think the decline of the show is mostly overstated. This season has been pretty funny imo. Show has always been hit or miss, people just remember the high points etc. Although the last episode was a reminder of how awful it was when one of Kristin Wiig's characters dominated a sketch every episode.
