Clue said Boston to Brussels. They just read the clue poorly. Pretty obvious why they went that direction.

I know what the clue said but again, how could Belgium be the answer really?? Did they honestly think the question was essentially "what country is Brussels in?" They really thought that FJ was on the level of a $200 clue in a capitals category in single jeopardy?

But why would the stopover be at the destination?

FWIW, the answer was obvious to me.

Guys, stop being so literal. Think like an academic with little real world experience while under the lights of a L.A. sound stage.

They did not parse the question well, neither did the champ as he answered with the airline instead of the country as asked. They saw Brussels and went with that because they had nothing else. Sometimes people freak out when they can't figure stuff out and scribble down something right in front of them. It's a much better answer than leaving it blank.

Ok, so yes then. They did actually think it boiled down to "Brussels is the capital of what country?" Interesting.

But they obviously thought naming the specific airline was part of the question. When they saw the category, it's likely their brains instinctively started indexing national airlines, and then like ntbo said, just panic scribbled the first thing they thought of.

I first thought Iceland, but the "small land" instead of "country" threw me and then I also forgot the category and nonsensically scrambled to Bermuda.

i don't think 'icelandic airlines' should have been accepted (and not because they are asking for a country)

answering belgium is simply awful

fwiw it seemed trivially easy to me. ireland would be a decent second guess, though of course it's much less likely that you'd stopover about 90 mins from your destination

Did Alex' voice sound odd to anyone else? Like it was dubbed by an impersonator or his voice was slightly low or high?

The contestant voices sounded normal to me.

And what another stupid DD wager towards the end. Not big enough to take the lead, but enough to knock him completely out of contention on a miss.

You must've missed the beginning - Alex apologized for his voice and said he had a cold, and a lot of what he said was redubbed.

Horrible DD wager - I was so tilted he didn't jam - also what a stupid FJ question, it was inevitable that someone would spell that wrong, and it's not fair to have the game be a spelling contest.

Sigh. Has nothing to do with spelling, has everything to do with not even being close to phonetically correct. He left out an entire syllable and was 3 or 4 letters short of the correct number.

Answers do not have to be spelled correctly.

Following the jboard discussion and doing a bit of research, it seems that the Persian translation of her name is literally Shahrazad. That's only three syllables, same as what the (former) champ wrote.

That's as close to a good case to bring him back at a later date (aside from the ToC) as I've seen on the program in many moons.

I'm aware that it doesn't have to spelled right, you giant nit. Scheherezade is a really tricky thing to get the syllables right because that construction isn't really found in English, and like you point out, it's a name from another language which has multiple known spellings. In an online trivia game recently I had to spell it and dithered about whether it was Scherezade or Scheherazade and went with the first one which was luckily accepted. The champion might've gone through the same thing - either you know the spelling and spell it with 4 syllables, or you probably get it wrong.

It's a horrible FJ question for that reason.

i'm with triumph. lol ntn as usual.

terrible DD wagers, terrible DD answers, and this voiceover sucks. a week of this is going to be pretty annoying. which is just making me think how awful it's going to suck with no alex.

Yeah, super nitty FJ ruling. That syllable is almost silent. Factor in the alternate spelling/pronunciation, he got pretty screwed. I know you need to draw a line somewhere and be consistent, but I can't imagine any reasonable opponent protesting if his answer was accepted there.

Funny that he also left a syllable out of "Sharapova" last week that could have cost him a win.

LOL at not betting it all on the DD about URL suffices when 3 clues were already gone. Double LOL for getting it wrong!

Technically 2nd and 3rd both screwed up there. 2nd had plenty of room to cover 2nd and still win a triple stumper.

With that knowledge 3rd SHOULD bet it all, but as we've noted before, 2nd will shove-bet enough times it is likely better for 3rd to stand pat (to hell with game theory--game theory only works when the other players wager rationally--we have tons of evidence that your average J! player does not).

So me likey 3rd's 0 wager counting on a triple stumper and 2nd overbetting.

LOL 1st betting it all. Keep a little back and you may just win a triple stumper with $999! and get to come back for another game.

10,100
9,600
5,800

The only part where I differ is on 3rd's $0 bet. I'd bet $1,801, which not only wins a triple stumper where 2nd overbet shoves, but also lets me win WWR when 2nd bets 2,001 to cover me (which I lose when I stand pat)

I think "Television in the 2000s" is probably going to run significantly lower than the overall triple stumper %, but that might be counterbalanced by the likely over aggressive bets by the leaders, so 3rd's best shot was still to go low and hope.

OMG OMG OMG OMG

It finally happened. A bunch of dumbazz wagers and $200 beats $14 beats $0.

First did the same thing as yesterday, bet it ALL from the lead.
3rd was an idiot who in this case should have bet exactly 0.

18,100 (18,100)
15,200 (15,000)
10,800 (10786)--how random is that
