Man, that was a bad wager from the former champ. Tough tough FJ though, I had the same thought process as Alex's explanation (think of a country with a US connection during the 19th century), but never really got out of the Caribbean to think about Liberia. Did briefly think of the Philippines at the beginning, but the date didn't match up, so back to the Caribbean I went

I know that Jeopardy tapes a week's worth of episodes in one day...while a show is taping, are contestants for the next show allowed to watch the current game?

If so, it seems reasonable to assume that "Philippines" would be incorrect for yesterday's FJ, since it was just recently used in a previous FJ (though perhaps more recently than 1 week, I can't remember exactly).

I know that contestants are sequestered in tournaments so as to not allow any advantage in wagering for wild card positions, but I'm curious to know if sequestering happens for regular games.

I can't imagine they are allowed to watch

i was rooting for the lady as soon as she got the "montreal canadians" but i liked the other challenger as well.
just glad that douchey champ is gone.

its weird how the FJ clues are either absurdly easy or insanely difficult.

Flags of the world is basic rote memorization stuff for Jeopardy, no?

i dont think that question really qualifies as "flags of the world".
it would be one thing if they showed a pic of the flag and you had to identify it, but that clue was really tough.

then again i dunno **** about flags of the world so my opinion my be skewed.

They are allowed to watch from a small section of the audience with no contact from non-contestants. After a game a producer goes over to them and announces the names of the next two contestants who then head back to makeup and what not.

We went over this (I think) during Arthur Chu's run when discussing contestants knowing to bet for the tie.

I've memorized tons of stuff for Jeopardy and trivia in general, but flags of the world is pretty low on that list. And as far as Jeopardy goes, it would probably be an all video category which doesn't happen that often.

That seems reasonable. Thanks for clarifying.

FWIW, I couldn't believe nobody got FJ. I thought it was pretty obvious.

Boo on that late DD wager today.

$5,000 is the worst of both worlds IMO. A large enough amount to put her *pretty far* out of a non-runaway situation if she misses, not enough to take the lead if she gets it.

Yeah bad wager but she was still super hot for Jeopardy standards and hot per any standard.

Also, the winner, Andrew, is a nit. 2600 on the FJ wager? Come on bro

Have you ever wagered $2600 on anything?

Perhaps he wasn't comfortable with the category. Should he have wagered $8k if the category was Inner Mongolian Opera?

I have, and I would've wagered even less, because I suck at Lit.

LOL. Yes, in fact I've wagered around 100k just in the past month+ on sports and daily fantasy sports but who cares? The wager was nitty but I guess when you are a nit yourself you really can't see that. If I'm in that spot there's no way I'm not risking the max. that still guarantees the win. It's a freeroll. How many times has FJ been "Inner Mongolian Opera?" Nice, stupid hypothetical. It was about as stupid as Tom Watson.

It's not a freeroll. He gets to take that money home, so he's betting his actual money. Wager should reflect confidence in the category.

Wow. Thought you sorta had to understand Jeopardy and trivia in order to post here, but perhaps not.

The fact is you haven't risked anywhere near $2600 on a single question of trivia (or probably any single wager on anything), so you have zero clue how to go about that from a real world point of view. He could have felt zero confidence in the category and made a small wager.

In regards to what you called my "stupid hypothetical", it's quite possible a contestant could know more about that topic than literature. The category means almost everything in a situation like this.

And then you state "it's a freeroll". No it is not, it's real money in this situation. What you already have means nothing. All that matters is how much you feel like wagering on one solitary question about a certain topic, assuming of course you don't risk the lock. That's it. It's no different than the idiots on Millionaire who state that they came here with nothing so they're going to risk 6 figures cash on a hunch. Morons. LOL at FJ being a freeroll.

I'd really love to see you wager $10k on a single trivia question on a topic you know nothing about. Brilliant.

Leave the trivia to the pros.

You should have taught him how to DD wager and he might have won.
