At least both Bill and the Librarian guy are owning they made poor wagers last night on the J!board thread. Librarian guy expects his desk to be littered with Little Mermaid stuff by co-workers. Librarian guy says he was flustered going into FJ and doesnt even remember the word German in the clue. Just locked up he says.

Hmmm
10400
10200
4400

4400 hits very late DD and shoves. Seems like getting above 1/2 of 1st is top priority, and better to get enough that we can bet in FJ to pass 1st and beat 1sts miss (assume first bets 10,000+), so 4400 should bet 1000 optimally?

If we get it right we have 5400 and can bet 5000 in FJ to tie 1st and still be at 400 which ties 1st (if 1st offers the tie at 10,000 and misses and 2nd shoves and misses).

If we miss the DD we have 3400 and we just bet 0 in FJ and hope the boys both bet big and miss.

She gets it and has 8800 going into FJ and shoves. A bet of 1600 to tie first is better by the same logic?

Two ways to win is better than 1? Or who cares if we win with only 400 and go big or go home?

It was 11400 and 11200, not 10400 and 10200, but no, shoving should be the only play there (or at least close, maybe hold back 100 bucks if you care about playing FJ). By shoving, she should put herself in a position to win on a triple stumper assuming everyone makes a rational wager. 1st bets to cover 2nd, 2nd bets to cover her, she bets small. Betting small on the DD has all the downside of making it a true DD, you're still locked out if you get it wrong, but lacks the upside of forcing both guys to get it right in front of her. Of course, they both made idiotic wagers in FJ, so who the **** knows what level they were on.

Oops on the 10 vs 11, but think the principle is the same- room to bet enough to get in range to make a cover bet vs a Level 2 wager by the leaders AND still win a triple stumper regardless if you get the DD right or not.

I did have my brick ready if she bet so small as to do neither, so shoving was not exactly a crime vs humanity (though shoving FJ was approaching that level).

2nd's FJ wager was the crime. Cover 2nd's double up, likely win the triple stumper. Either that or you have to shove all of it. Holding back a couple of dollars is stupid.

But you aren't in triple stumper territory with a DD wager of 1k. Let's just use the 10.4k and 10.2k figures since that was your initial train of thought, if she bets 1k and gets it right, she has 5.4k. Double up, that's 10.8k, so the guy in second only has to wager 600. He gets it wrong, that's 9.4k, greater than 5.4k, so you still can't win on a triple stumper, you have to get it right and hope for both players in front of you to get it wrong. And of course, if she gets it wrong, she has 3.4k, which is less than half of 10.2k, so she should be locked out assuming a rational wager from 2nd, so there's nothing to be gained from betting small.

If she bets everything, she would have 8.8k, double that is 17.6k, so the guy in second has to bet 7.4k to cover. If he gets it wrong, he has 2.8k, so now she wins on a triple stumper. The goal is to get to 2/3rds of second place (ideally, 3/4ths to be able to cover a zero wager from 2nd and still win on a triple stumper), and with a few questions still on the board, betting everything is the best way to ensure that.

Irrational wagers by 2nd happen a significant amount of time--somewhere around 40% if I remember the discussions from last season. If we are standing at that podium we have to factor in not only the rational wager, but what we see.

Agree on the 2/3 point better than just betting the DD to get over 50%.

Heck if we stand pat at 4400, we win WWW (19%) x irrational wager (40%)=8% which isnt horrible considering we are in 3rd.

A lot of permutations to calc out so not attempting this morning. I have a sense that 3rd should leave enough on a DD miss to still win if 1st and 2nd "shove".

Do we agree that shoving from 8800 in FJ was bad?

So happy to see Christian lose. Gets early DD with 2k and bets 400, then gets first of DJ with 8400 to 5000 lead and bets 600. He had good knowledge too. Could have been a winner if he didn't wager like a bitch.

+1 Gaddy

Horrible wagers by 2nd and 3rd in FJ as well. 2nd was close enough to make a 1,000 wager and still win a double stumper.

3rd could have just bet 0 and hope for 2nd to idiot bet. Another example of 2nd place not wagering rationally.

Yeah, just watched yesterday's episode. Seemed like a pretty difficult board and obviously awful wagering from everyone except for the new champ. I just will never understand the thought process of pushing everything in from second place unless you're facing a returning champ who plays for the tie.

Also, if I remembered the scores right, standard brutal suicide bet by second, just never ends. And apparently first place ****ed up her wager too, yikes

Third place guy looked like Don Draper.

Good game tonight. Looking forward to the two of them coming back on Monday.

WOW, just watched Friday on the DVR.

Nice to see the champ bet all of it, if you are going to choose big, might as well shove and hope for the tie!

(vs an unknown I think we should bet much smaller such that we pass 1st but still win a triple stumper)

Long time J! watcher, first time poster ITT.

Holy God, was that an awful awful final jeopardy clue. I cannot stress how terrible that clue was.

+1

I read it as a 6 letter word starting with a letter somewhere in the middle of the alphabet. Guessed murder but felt that was way too obvious. Would have written it down but hated it.

This ep she wagered the extra dollar to avoid the tie. Interesting.

We live in Philly now. Oy that accent on the new champ.

i'm not going to read the thread right now as i'm still a handful of eps behind, so apologies if this has already been discussed.

the first ep sports jeopardy is available to stream online

it's pretty terrible and will only serve to instantly make you realise how incredible trebek. it's incredibly lame of me to criticise based on one ep but wow, dan patrick sucks hard at this!
