What have you guys done to me, just burned through the first season, starting to remember some Korean lol

Rewatching season 1 with a friend.

It's fun to watch him go through the process of learning and remembering names and even distinguishing faces.

But man, his reactions is reminding me that the deathmatches in season 1 sucked big time (and it doesn't help that they reuse them). It's the only thing he's not liking thus far.

We've watched 4 eps. He's rooting for Poong and Eunji interestingly enough. He very much dislikes Jungmoon.

I don't even watch s1 death matches - tbh the reusability of the games I felt was really brutal. Plus 3 of the games are pretty much the same

I think it's the main knock on S4 that the death matches were all replays, meaning it became a studyfest as opposed to figuring it out on the spot.

It did leave to some interesting spots but would much prefer all new games and think it is more inline with the point of the show.

I kinda disagree. There were only 3 DMs where extra studying/practice was likely to have a significant payoff (Jangii, Monorail, Gyul/Hap). It's probably more precise to say that, since a lot of players studied those games, then not studying those games put you at a disadvantage. The first 3 DMs (Black & White, Yutnori, RPS) were leveling-wars and don't allow much room for improvement if players were to attempt extensive studying.

I think the ability for players to veto games was in-line/consistent with a lot of the show's skill-based principles (such as the "many types of genius" discussed in the S3 opener). Said differently, the veto system favored the well-balanced DM players (such as Hyunmin & Dongmin) who could play many games well instead of favoring players who were well-lopsided (such as the poker pros).

If there's a way to combine the features of "figuring it out on the spot" and the features of the veto system, that would seem to be the best of both worlds. Some of the new wrinkles to existing games (e.g. the time limit in Jangii, the virtual players in lol-Quattro) were perhaps a step in that direction.

Well I'm hosting the 2nd installment of the Genius this weekend. I stopped updating the old game because, well, it ended somewhat abruptly and I started planning the new game immediately afterwards.

For this one I put together rudimentary video explanations for the overall game and each individual game within and uploaded them to YouTube to save a bunch of time (time was an issue in the first game). Other time-saving measures were also added.

Anyways, I'm going to put a link to the overall game YouTube to give an idea as to what the game is about. I'll elaborate on games and people involved if anyone's interested.

(the name of my game is Wile btw)

The lineup for tomorrow:

C - me - the host. Oldest person here (34). Very much about the "spirit" of the game, which makes hosting this a little difficult as it's all about angleshooting. Really enjoy watching how the game works. Clearly have too much time on my hands.

-------

W - good friend and co-worker. Smart guy but loses focus very quickly. Not very good at listening, especially when he thinks he's right. If he behaves he could be a solid wingman to the Grand Final; if not, he could be the worst. 7-1

S - W's g/f. Loves games like this. Isn't the greatest skill-wise but is easily the most passionate about winning. Will have a notepad by her side the entire day. Has a high floor but low ceiling. 12-1

K - decent friend and co-worker. Smart, but thinks he's smarter than he is. Has the ability to put the entire game on tilt by pretending not to know what's going on. Will be the biggest target throughout because of his personality. 5-1

Am - K's wife. Very likeable. One of the weaker players, but is able to squeak her way through the games with little fanfare. Very susceptible to K's wishes - if she doesn't listen to him she could go far. 16-1

V - decent friend and co-worker. Loves to mix things up. In Wile I he was the catalyst to the game being really successful. Epitome of a person that could play both sides and get away with it. Okay at heads-up games. 11-1

M - V's g/f. Deceptively sly. She's the type of person who lets the loudmouths deal with the drama but is constantly "in the know". Average ability in heads-up challenges. 9-1

S - co-worker. Somewhat aloof. Will certainly be a good ally in that he'll do what you say. Will have little clue how to solve puzzles. Low skill in challenges. 30-1

Ap - S's wife. Fun girl. Very similar to V in that she'll be ready and wiling to stir **** up for the game. Much smarter than she appears. Has potential if she can deal with the attention she'll bring forward. 14-1

An - good friend and co-worker. Loves life. Very loyal and not backstabby. Will immediately go on tilt if something abnormal happens. A perfect person to have on your team. Reasonably successful in challenges if he doesn't go on tilt. 20-1

C - good friend and co-worker. Loves winning and doesn't care who he pisses off to do it. Simultaneously made everyone hate him during the Election game in Wile I - people are still frothy about it now lol. Could run the table in Elimination games. 5-1

J - good friend and co-worker. Similar mindset to C but will piss off people just to do it. Not nearly as dangerous as C, but if the two of them get together the dynamic of the game could become 10 v 2 very quickly. 12-1

D - friend and co-worker. Very independent. Will try and lead the team, but doesn't have the command presence to do it. If he remains the grey man he has a good shot of success, but has the tendency to overstep his bounds. If he's around for the last few more independent games he could be scary. 13-1

Nice.

Would it be possible to give them fake names instead of letters? It's hard to remember people by letters, at least for me.
The Genius Quote
03-19-2016 , 09:06 AM
Yeah I'll try and do that - the names will start with the same letter

So, at Cory's (**** disturber) going-away party yesterday I learned 2 things:

1. There will be 2 spectators extremely interested in watching. This may be useful as I could use some help, especially in the elimination matches

2. Somebody paid April to take her slot. Mike, a friend and co-worker, felt left out after ditching the first one and not having a spot so he negotiated someone's spot. His background: very friendly; can be quite naïve; susceptible to individual challenges. Definitely known as one of the weaker players, but people might feel bad picking on him. Great ally to have. 25-1

Concentration, truth detector, mastermind and odd/even war. Each elimination candidate will get to veto one each. For the fifth multiplayer elimination challenge it will be gyul-hap (renamed match-stop):

Exhausted, but the game went really well - even better than the first one. Will work on write-ups starting tomorrow.

First game of the day was Swords and Shields: https://youtu.be/wR0TfF5gqtY

Essentially the same rules as the original but for 6 a team. All decisions were made as a team - no one went out of their way to do something outside what the group wanted.

Veritas went first, and they chose to attack double sword on the second player. Falso defended without doubt.

Falso then attacked double sword on the first player that just attacked with double sword. He defended with his opposite shield. No doubts.

Veritas then attacked again with double swords (you only get one per team) - Falso second player decided to doubt (lol) and obviously got shown double swords. Veritas gets angry because their double swords are now visible. I shrug because people don't read rules.

Now Falso attacks single sword against the first player. Again defends with same shield. I learn that 3 of the players are sure that the first player is the Leader. Play continues.

Veritas attacks with single sword vs the Falso Leader. He defends with his shield. Play goes on.

Falso again attacks first player with sword. He now defends with opposite shield. Again no bluff is called. This game is getting out of hand quickly.

Veritas again attacks with single sword against the Leader and last player of Falso doubts. They're shown the sword and are down 6-4.

Falso single swords the first player yet again, and is told about the shield. No doubt.

Now it gets interesting - knowing that an uneven number would occur throughout the game, I made sure to deal with it beforehand. "If one team had more players in a round the round would end before one team would have 2 players attack in a row". Both teams knew this.

Well since the sixth person of Falso was the one to call the bluff in the previous round, Falso thought that they could angleshoot Veritas' 5th player not getting a first round turn because the round was over.

Falso player Cory: that's bull**** they get more turns than us
Me: I told you the rules beforehand - they haven't taken 2 turned in a row so he gets his turn
Cory: **** you this is bull****
Me: sorry don't know what to tell you
Cory: you ****ing suck we asked specifically and you said if it was 6 v 4 they wouldn't get their turn
Me: I said the same team wouldn't get 2 turns in a row
Cory: **** this **** you
Me: if you don't like it quit
Cory: I will
Me: cool there's a lineup to get in anyways
Cory: it's ****ing bull****
Me: I put a billion hours into this thing so suck it up and be a man

(girl who was extremely hungover excitedly comes out of a bedroom expecting us to be fighting but ends up being disappointed)

Things cool off. One guy on his team is like wtf settle down we're getting demoed. Last veritas person plays and uses single sword on the (unknown to them) Falso leader. No doubt cast.

After the round Veritas had their first player with 3 hits on one shield and two on the other. Falso had 2 players eliminated and their leader with 3 hits.

Falso starts their second round attacking the 4th player with single sword and no doubt.

Veritas attacks the Leader again with single sword. They then call me aside:

Falso: if we doubt this and are wrong does the attack still happen?
Me: of course

They essentially call uncle and the Leader calls the bluff. Of course he is shown the sword and the game is over.

Afterwards it is revealed that Veritas' first player had 2 bare hands - he bluffed the double sword and every shield afterwards lol. The Veritas leader hadn't been touched.

As punishment for his tirade earlier, Veritas voted Cory as the Elimination Candidate. Cory strategically picked Kyle as his opponent. After vetoing truth detector and concentration they were randomly allocated mastermind.
The Genius Quote
03-22-2016 , 07:55 PM
From my Amazing Race games, they are both reasonably versed in mastermind. Both players provide their 4 digit numbers - interestingly both numbers have 1 digit duplicated.

Kyle goes first and just randomly picks numbers. Cory plays 1234. Again Kyle randomizes and Cory plays 1567. Both players then continue back and forth for 3 turns each pretty much trading water.

Cory then plays 4777 and is rewarded with 3 filled circles - 3 numbers in the right spot. He now knows, from the guesses earlier, that one of the 7s is a zero. So Kyle only has at most 3 turns to guess the answer.

After yoloing twice (and Cory missing twice) he misses his third try and Cory cleans up with 4707. Kyle is the first player in the Relegation Pool. Cory apologizes for his outburst earlier. The day has begun with the 2 favorites battling it out right off the bat.

Next up: the jury game

The Genius' PD says he'll make a season 5 if his new ****ing music show gets over 3% ratings. I guess I'll stop hoping for it to fail.

This is just a The Genius Facebook post and not an official promise.

Crime Scene's PD says he'll definitely make a season 3 too.

All aboard the hype train!

What would be folks' preferences for the composition of the S5 cast? Is anyone opposed to a S3-ish mix of all new players and minimal (if not zero) celebrities?

Not at all opposed to that. Though now that I've watched a ton of Korean shows, I wouldn't mind celebs either as I'll probably know them :P
