Hoping this is good, but definitely not holding my breath. Out later this month.

I love WW2 stuff, but I never liked band of brothers or the Pacific.

I watched first two episodes of BOB and gave up. I just watched first episode of the pacific

How is that possible, what don't you like about the shows?

You tried SAS: Rogue Heroes?

Very loosely based on the true story of the SAS's formation, less 'serious' or heavy than BOB or Pacific, but very entertaining.
Never heard of it, but looks interesting. Will try it next, thanks!

Late to most of the chatter but finished up The Pitt the other night.

Absolutely excellent. Having spent a significant amount of time recently in hospitals it really felt authentic (of course, overly dramatic in a lot of ways too). Didn't take the easy way out on a bunch of the writing which made it feel that much more real: in particular the Dr. Langdon arc as well as Jake's reaction to Robby at the end. Very emotionally intense show. Not much of a medical drama guy but can't imagine watching some pulp like Grey's Anatomy vs. this.

I started watching based on this recommendation. I like it! It's a simple feel-good show. With 4 seasons of material!

I am watching The Knick and it pairs so well with The Pitt. Amazing how far we've come in 125 years of medicine with lots of mistakes along the way.

Watched Built in Birmingham: Brady and the Blues ostensibly about Brady's ownership in Birmingham City FC.

I love these kinds of docs and the first few episodes were pretty good. Even if some of the Brady cut ins were a bit rich for my liking.

But then it just ran out of gas. I guess since the team did so well and easily won promotion the second half of the season didn't hold much drama but man it was just over after 5 episodes.

Still a fin watch but the All or Nothing ones from a few years ago are much better. If you are looking for a breezy watch and like the Premier League it's ok

Have you seen Welcome to Wrexham?

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney buy low league Wrexham AFC. Very, very good.

I wish I could say what it is exactly that I don't like about band of brothers and the Pacific.

I can say some things I think it's missing. shows/movies like generation kill and full metal jacket capture the darkness, the exploitation of the soldiers, the horror of it all.

in band of brothers it seemed more like the military was there to do this great, heroic thing. there was no awareness of the whole part of the deal that is rich old guys sending young poor guys to fight and kill each other.

and yeah, lots of ww2 content is like that, pure propaganda of good USA fighting evil Nazis and evil Japan. and completely leaving out the communist Soviet union who took on the Nazis head on, killing millions of them, and losing millions. and also leaving out how communists and fascists are enemies, and how most of USA political class allied with Nazis before and after the war... and it's still some good content cuz you just kind of accept that the people making it are lying or ignorant or both. it is what it is.

but with those two HBO shows I feel like they were saying "we're gonna really show you the real truth of it all, the nitty gritty. this is war!" but it wasn't real. it was just more propaganda. granted, I didn't watch the whole show. maybe it got more dark later on, and showed USA war crimes and stuff. I mean even in saving private Ryan propaganda, they showed USA soldiers just executing troops who were trying to surrender.

Hey that's great to hear. I love it and all the seasons are high quality. Someone mentioned The Knick. That's one of my favorite shows of all time. Sadly we only got 2 seasons.

Incredible series.

I’m not interested in their spin-off to Mexico however

I can agree on the BoB part. I love the show, but it did glorify war a little too much sometimes

You should watch The Pacific then though, especially episodes 5-9.
It does an amazing job of capturing the horror of that war. Its much more dark and depressing.

I lost interest in Band of Brothers after two or three episodes. Haven't seen the Pacific. Loved Generation Kill.

I've never even heard of Band of Brothers. Does it have Tom Hanks son in it or something?

It's a mini series about the Beach Boys. Tom Hanks is not in it.

Re The Knick, nothing like an intense opening scene to draw you in. I got sidetracked with Sharp Objects and only saw a few episodes but will probably go back and watch it at some point. The few episodes I did see were really good.

Olive Kitteridge. Great performances by Francis McDormand and Richard Jenkins. (No surprise there.) It's only four episodes and worth checking out if you like melancholic character studies with a dreary tone. It's a lot like Boyhood in that it follows her during different periods of her life while a lot of things happen and, at the same time, nothing really happens, but more intriguing.

I’m in early S2. There a few episodes that are slow or they are tough to watch due to the bleakness of the times. I’d say over half the episodes have been excellent and worthy of being grouped with the top tier tv shows.
