I'm not a huge fan of fantasy novels, but I saw the promo on HBO and got intrigued so I picked up the book (Kindle, FTW!). Its honestly one of the best books I've ever read but I've been cautioned that it all goes south rather quickly.

Whoever told you that is wrong. Unless you mean literally.

It doesn't. For the first three books, at least, it only gets better.

And the main problem most people have with book four is that their favorite characters aren't in it because GRRM split the book and put some POVs in book 5. Now they have had to wait for those for ten years (since book 3). That won't be the case for you, as GRRM is getting close to finishing ADwD (lol)

I think I'm going to start the reread in the next day or two. I'd agree with the last few posters that 2,3 > 1 >> 4.

in for reread, just fired it up on the Kindle

Nice. I just had an image of the doctor from Arrested Development recommending the series.

2, 3, 1 ^ imo

I remember years ago when I would go to martin's website every week to see if there was a new update on when the book would be finished. then it turned into once a month, then once every 2-6 months. Now I might be back on checking every other day or so. I'm ****in excited.

Book 4 also wasn't as good because it seemed like Martin put a little filler in it..:cough: :cough: ugly boring wench :cough:

btw I just don't get the whole Kindle thing. Like honestly I can't think of one reason why people would use it. I guess it's cool to have a library at your fingertips or whatever? but the feel, smell, turning of pages of a real book is like half the fun for me. I digress.

I love it because I have massive ADD when it comes to books, and with the kindle I always have 20+ options available, so when I'm not in the mood for a certain book I can always just go to a different one, also it's only $16 atm to get the first 3 on kindle which is a huge bargain

built in dictionary is pretty sweet too

Yeah I used to have a grave problem with accumulating books. Now I have one bookcase and a Kindle full of ****.

I've been considering getting one because I do a lot of traveling and like to read 3 or 4 books at a time. Right now I'm reading London by Edward Rutherford and hauling that tome around in backpack by itself is a pain. If I could cut the weight down and carry everything I'm reading it'd be a huge plus. I would greatly miss the feel of books though.

Oh and also I've been stopped twice at customs in China. Both of them were for books. The first time I was bringing Hiroshima into China, and the customs officers were clearly concerned about the book. They asked me if it was about Japan which would have been impossible to deny. Then they asked if it was about WW2, obviously I said yes. Then they had a quick discussion in Chinese which went something like this.

"Well it's about Japan should we confiscate it?"

"Hmmm but it's about Japan during WW2, as we all know all the Japanese then were total dicks. This book couldn't possibly say anything good about Japan."

"Ah good point, ok let him pass."

So could possibly sidestep that potential hassle again with the kindle.

Just finished A Feast For Crows, now I'm pissed.
01-13-2011 , 12:27 AM
Some of us finished it in 2005 .

Hahaha I bet you read that little note he wrote at the end and thought "gosh, i have to wait a whole year for the next book!"

Half a decade later...

Questions

Spoiler:
Brienne ends up getting hanged right? It seemed like he left a little opening there

Spoiler:
Got confused when they kept calling someone the Hound in the last Brienne chapter, it was just someone wearing his helmet right?

Spoiler:
CERSEI GOT PWNDDD

Spoiler:
Yea Brienne definitely got hanged.

Not sure about the Hound stuff.

I haven't really been looking forward to rereading the last book but I forgot about Cercei failing..which was totally sweet. bah guess i'll read it now

Spoiler:
I believe the general consensus is that the Hound is alive, however he is not the man currently wearing the helmet. Most people believe that the Hound is seen in one of Brienne's chapters and is just referred to as large man digging something which I can no longer remember. The biggest clue to this potentially being the hound is that when he was found he was with a horse that only he could tame.

Spoiler:
Is the Hound the one that Oberyn almost killed, or did kill? There are pretty much whole characters that I don't remember anything about...couldn't for the life of me tell you who the **** Davos is (except that I think he's from the Iron Islands), and I've read all 4 books.

Was Oberyn present/hilarious/awesome/badass in the first couple of books? He wasn't really on my radar until the fight for Tyrion. So brutal...had to look away from the page, probably a first for me.

hey guys,

check out the pillars of the earth on starz. it came out a while ago but now it's on bluray. i've only watched the first two episodes but it really reminds me a game of thrones, in the fact there is alot of power struggle between the houses, weird little mysteries, royalty, politics, revenge, backstabbing, who to trust, etc. i've never read the book but i really like it so far and i think game of thrones fan will like it as they have many similarities. it had like one rape scene and two sex scenes (they were pretty tame though), and a girl peeing in public, incase if you guys are into that thing also (that was just the first two episodes!)

Spoiler:
The guy who fought Oberyn was the Hounds brother.

Agreed that Oberyn was a badass and i hated that he died ..i don't think he was mentioned until the 3rd book...maybe end of 2nd.

Regarding Pillars of the Earth..great book..watched some of the series and didn't like it but I'm in the minority. Most people think it's pretty good.
