Martin Freeman not winning for Fargo and MM not winning for True Detective are criminal travesties. Veep still being overlooked for best comedy series is also a joke, but nowhere near on the level of what happened to MM especially, and Freeman second.
The EMMYs has a well known history of blowing great shows in their last season, and this year was no exception (HBO's shot over the Academy's bow was laughably unsuccessful, and it literally could have come down to the Academy not thinking that True Detective should have been in that category). I have no doubt that Breaking Bad should have won Best Drama, but Cranston, as great as he was, did not give the best performance in that category.
Modern Family winning, again, was more of a travesty then MM not winning. I think Cranston deserved it, as would MM and maybe even WH had either of them won it. I was totally expecting MM to win it, but regardless, it wasn't the least bit a travesty. Just how it goes....
Sorry, TD, but ya ****ed up not submitting for mini-series. You'd have damn near swept.
Modern Family is a good show and was great for about a year and a half but it's not a legendary show that should be winning the Emmy every damn year. 2 years max it should have won.
DC, I don't think TD would have beaten Fargo in that category (I see you wrote that while I was responding), but I definitely think MM would have crushed that category.
I don't watch Modern Family, so I have no idea of how overrated it was.
I just personally have a problem have a problem with Cranston (who basically gave great performances over and over, without having a real substantial raise the bar acting arc since the end of season 4, in my opinion) winning, because what did he do that was THAT much better than what he did in previous seasons? What clip did they play in the nominees (it better have been "tread lightly")? MM gave a once in a generation TV performance, but again, that show did not belong in the Drama category, and it will probably make HBO not be so stupid next time.
The EMMYs is always about style over substance, which is pathetic. Freeman gave a great performance in this season of Sherlock, easily his biggest part in it, but his season 1 performance was better. Cumberbatch felt much more like he was phoning it in this last season, but his season 1 performance (which he did not even get nominated for) was as incredible of a reboot (actually more) as Mads as Hannibal (don't get me started).
It would be like Spielberg being up for Oscar for Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. and winning for E.T. The better property didn't win.
Out of all the things that happened complaining about Cranston winning seems wrong to me. Either way I loved both shows but I'm happy with the results b/c to me its more of honoring not only the final season but the show as a whole.
I'd rather watch reruns of Just Shoot Me than Modern Family. A great forgotten Levitan sitcom was Stark Raving Mad, Tony Shalhoub and Neil Patrick Harris. Criminally cancelled after season 1.
