From the guy who brought you The Shield.

It stars Jennifer Beals, who is milftastic and the guy from Brotherhood, who is funny looking.

It's been well reviewed, which is the only reason I'm watching it- as the promos

"YOU'RE TRYING TO CHANGE HOW THINGS WORK... IN CHICAGO" are like "her father is the district attorney" terrible.

Basic premise is that Beals is the new head cop, and Jason Clarke is her former partner and they try and take down Delroy Lindo, who has moved on from his limo service in Get Shorty to be Clay Davis in Chicago or something.

It was originally called "Ride Along" but the name changed at about the same time they realized Ryan's other show Terriers had confused everybody with its name.

I'll watch on the strength of the reviews, but I'm totally ready for it to turn out to be bad. Previews make it look corny as hell, but I'm hoping that's just crappy studio editing.

I think Shawn Ryan is excellent. The Shield was elite and is still vastly underrated. He worked on Lie to Me for a little while. I like the show, but don't have any reasonable input to differentiate between seasons 1-2 (no Ryan) and season 3 (Ryan). He also was behind Terriers, which was excellent before being (unjustly) cancelled.

Based on the previews for this show, I am expecting to be let down. It just seems like this show is going to be a good concept with good enough management behind it. However, it also seems like Fox is going to bastardize it. I know it is naive to assume the show is going to be a certain way before seeing it, but it's hard to picture this show being allowed to actually be good without interference. I just expect it to be dumbed down. It's hard to picture this as an individually unique/impressive show. I can only imagine it as a commercialized, cheesy attempt at bringing corruption/justice/etc themes to the mainstream.

Edit: I'm probably biased in the sense that I don't think its possible for big networks to air anything of quality. I hate fox. I think shows like this tend to be decent enough in the first season before steadily enduring huge drops of quality in each significant season. I'll watch it, though!

That the previews for the show are terrible strikes me as something of a perversely good sign; often it means they don't have much to work with, but some of the time it's a sign that the show is too subtle for the marketing monkeys to understand and so they construct previews to make it look like something it's not, which almost always makes the show look bad.

I'm watching, not because of the reviews or any word-of-mouth, but because Shawn Ryan has earned the benefit of the doubt and so he gets at least a few episodes of my time.

Saying that Terriers was "unjusty" cancelled is silly. It did terrible, terrible ratings. Great show, best new one of the year and in the running for just flat best of the year- but it was 100% the correct call for FX to nuke it given the financial realities.

Is equally silly. While right now there aren't a lot of stellar network dramas beyond Friday Night Lights (if you're talking big 4- and FNL might not count depending on how you think of it). There's plenty of quality comedies out there.

I agree with you on the first point. I should clarify that it was unjustly cancelled if you judge it re: quality, not re: ratings. Obviously networks have good reason to cancel shows that have poor ratings and don't make them $.

As for the second, I agree that there are some decent comedies out there on big networks. Community, etc. I think Friday Night Lights is heavily overrated and bad (I've seen everything except the latest season, so I'm not just trolling/hating), but I understand that some people (incl a majority on 2+2) like it and can see past the flaws. The actors are old, the writing is unrealistic and overdramatic, etc. I would clarify my point by saying that it's rare and almost impossible to see an elite drama on big networks. However, my point is probably still silly and exaggerated because of my bias.

Really liked the episode... Broke my rule of a show getting renewed for a third season before watching it for this.

Ending up watching this while doing other things. The accents were painful, the voiceover really corny, but it seemed ok. The pace, while standard for Ryan, was a bit much for me, but that may have just been my distracted focus.

The accents jumped out at me too especially Beals. Beals Chicago accent sounds more like Minnesota and seems very forced and annoying. Brotherhood guy still has an east coast accent and initially his ex-wife seemed to have east coast too but then she tried to add a midwestern nansalness to it.

Beals was born and raised in Chicago fwiw.

Enjoyed the show. Really like Clarke and Ryan is boss so will continue watching. Wish the show wasn't on network TV but hopefully that'll help it find an audience and stick around.

So was I but that's not her natural voice and it is annoying and over the top.

Brotherhood guy is from Australia, so it's not really an "east coast" accent as much as it's just bad. I think it's something I'll get used to, but was jarring. More for Beals who yeah, just doesn't sound like that.

The voice-over sucked and took me out of the show each time but I like the guy from Brotherhood so I'll give it an episode or two.

My guess is the voiceovers were a pilot thing to quickly give us some background on the characters and will likely not continue.

For those of you who have watched this show, Detroit 187, and Southland, which of these would you say is best? I'm asking because I don't have time to watch all 3 and am looking for a good, current cop show. The Shield is probably my all-time favorite cop show and it probably won't ever be topped, just to give you an idea on where I'm coming from.

finally was able to watch ep 1 over the weekend.

+1 on the accents. Bad. Really bad. I am shocked that Beals is from Chicago and that's what she came up with for a Chicago accent. That being said the show was pretty good.
