P crazy the amount of cash the Phils are throwing around. Good to see the Phils putting the cash back into the team. Also thought this was interesting:

Montgomery said the team would consider exceeding the luxury tax threshold for the first time.
"We may very well need to do that to do the right things on the field," he said.

So maybe Lee isn't getting traded?

It will be basically impossible to keep everyone and fill out the roster without going into the tax next year. Still don't think they would move Lee but maybe Pence gets moved. Dave Murphy had a blog post about this today.

Quote:
All of that adds up to $153.075 million for 16 players, with nine spots left to fill. Add another $10 million for player benefits, which count against the luxury tax threshold, and the Phillies are $14 million under the $178 million threshold.

Make sure to rock Phillies gear and cheer obnoxiously for the Phils, start chants even. It will make the Nats fans mad, especially their faux homer announcers.

Rather have Bourn for like 11-12 million/per (hoping they can get him somewhere in there). Younger, better defensively, cheaper, etc.

Bourn will get 15m/yr on his next deal at the very least. Speed and defense (esp at a premium position) isn't nearly as undervalued as it once was by front offices. It is still undervalued by the arbitration process, though.

I don't know, you still have guys like Brian Sabean, Mike "Eye Test" Rizzo and Ruin Tomorrow Jr running clubs, so there's still plenty of dummies out there.

I can't really think of any comparable players who've seen a deal anywhere near that size.

My brother and I were just wondering the other day if we could get Bourn for like 5/55 5/60 & then sign Greinke as well (before the Cole deal).

Now that they signed Cole I have no idea what they will do.

Ideally a cost effective OFer and 3Bman that turn into ~ 2.5 - 3 WAR guys....hahahahaha like Rub knows how to pick those guys out.

The last 4 days have been fun though. Would be nice to win 4/6 in Atl/Wash. I don't mean to get back in the race....just to keep playing well.

yeah there aren't that many comps at all. we talked about that a bit in the Braves thread. I think he'll likely end up middling something like Furcal's first deal with the Dodgers (3yr/36m or something like that) and Crawford's deal. That will put him in the 15-16m a year range. I don't think he'll get more than 5 years, but he'll def get paid.

thankfully he doesn't have to get anything back for people like Polanco/Victorino/Pence/Wigginton/Pierre, just getting rid of them is enough (although it would be nice to get something you can claim is good for Pence... sadly I think RAJ thinks Pence is good)

Couple different media outlets reporting that there is a deal in place to send Pence to SF pending SF ownership approval. No word on what the Phils would get back.
