We don't need to get rid of his contract now. We have $16m in cap space still, could free up another $2.5m by cutting James Casey, and after this year we could even cut him without much dead money if a draft pick looks like a younger cheaper #1WR. In the meantime, don't ****ing dump our WR1 for a 3rd rounder when our next two established NFL wideouts are Maclin coming off his 3rd ACL tear and Riley Cooper FFS.

"From the Eagles' standpoint, the guy is under contract and has no options,"

"You don't have to trade him. If he doesn't get a new deal, he'll eventually report (to training camp). Nine out of 10 times, they're going to end up playing."

"As far as trading a guy under contract, if people are going to low-ball you, you don't have to trade him," Casserly said. "It comes down to how bad you want to get rid of a player."

What baffles me is why are we waiting until a week or two after free agency to do this? I would have been okay with the move if they used the extra cap space to go out and sign Byrd, Revis, Decker, etc. The cap space we're saving this year isn't going to be used in any meaningful way.

D104, I agree that if it's just the typical DJax stuff we've been hearing about with him wanting a new deal or whatever then it's pretty nonsensical to get rid of him. If it's his personality / ego, then Chip needs a reality check. This is the NFL, not college. There's bound to be less than desirable personalities when the competition is at it's highest level with millions of dollars at stake. It's up to Chip to find a way to make it work and get everybody to buy in, not get rid of one of your most valuable assets.

I think it's a mix of everything (from Chip's standpoint). Poor blocking ability, shortness, locker room/off the field issues, contract too big, etc. They're obviously a worse offense without him, until they address the need in the draft (which they would most likely do). Or who knows, maybe he ends up staying still.

If what we're doing here is start shopping DeSean --> Not liking the offers --> Grudingly taking one once we've thoroughly ****ed up the relationship, I'm gonna be a sad panda.

Redeyes,

I do have confidence in chip to design a productive offense without djax, however I do believe that desean's contribution to this offense is significant. He can provide a dimension to the offense that no other player on the roster can provide. And maybe it's the years of emotional scarring that pinkston, na brown and Freddie Mitchell inflicted on me, but finding a competent starting wr in the draft is a difficult thing, let alone finding a great one. This offense is set for the next few years with desean on the roster, and I just haven't heard a reason for opening up a hole at WR by trading him.

My main point is that desean is still in his prime and can make a claim to being the best wr in franchise history. Thus, I'd really like to hear a great reason for shopping him.

so......
there is no apparent pressing reason for the eagles to get rid of djax, correct? (they can afford him under the current cap, he hasn't ****ed up off the field as far as we know, etc).

if chip and co are not forced to play their hand, then why make the move?
(in no particular order)

1. they are confident in their plan post djax. deep wr draft over multiple rounds + chip offense doesn't rely upon deep burner speed (although it's a bonus).

2. djax wants more money this season but he will be back since he is under contract and the eagles control where he goes. (if they don't trade him, he doesn't leave...if he pouts and plays like a bitch next year nobody wants him).

there's no reason for the eagles to take a ****ty trade for him (read 3rd round pick) unless they are going to package the result of that trade with someone else to increase the rosters value by moving up and drafting a receiver that has equivalent to better skills and get paid a rookie contract for the next few years.

I'm guessing this is a case of djax's agent (who's paid a percentage) seeing him come off a career year and trying to squeeze out more commission.

this whole discussion reminds me of a plane flight I had a few years ago.
there was crazy turbulence right before landing, winter storm, etc...the plane was jumping up and down, passengers were freaking out, and for a second I panicked...until I reminded myself I had absolutely no control over the situation so why worry about it? i put my trust in the pilot the second I bought my ticket, so why change my trust now?. I told myself to sit back and let the pilot take care of things. know what? he landed the plane.

the worst sort of passenger is the one that wants to push the pilot out of the plane mid flight.

from what i understand he has a different agent from the one that negotiated his current deal, so this new one hasn't made any real money from djax yet and could definitely be highly motivated to seek a new contract.

Wow talk is releasing him now? I can't wrap my head around this. I mean he was high paid, but THAT bad?

If they're really willing to release him, there has to be more to the story. Maybe more will be leaked once he's gone.

This seems nuts. It also seems nuts that nobody would give up a pick to make sure they get him- makes you wonder what is really going on.

This is so ****ed. Usually the Phillies and Flyers are the organizations pissing me off this much. But unless DeSean got robbed of child gang rape videotapes by Matthew McConaughey, they are taking a completely ******ed course of action here.

My best guess is that Desean sexually assaulted someone in the front office and it's part of the confidential settlement that he be traded or released immediately.

I'm joking, but only sort of.

That's a bit much. Minus desean plus maclin/sproles isn't worth that many games. Wouldn't surprise me if they're still a top five offense.

Wow so word is numerous teams including the Jets want him via trade, but only if he agrees to restructure his contract. He refuses to, hence why they're going to be stuck having to release him.

How cap stuck are the Eagles this year that they can't just have him play this out?

The story is he is expensive and isnt worth it (to Chip). He's a malcontent and his salary is better off being used for the other side of the ball, put away for a rainy day, or preparing Foles better for life without desean after his inevitable massive contract.

Related: I have no doubt that Chip believes he can have a top 5 offense if given Carolina's wr corps.
