I feel bad for you younger guys. You have no idea how f'ing good the Yankees were in 1998 and 1999. They would be losing playoff games in the 6th or 7th innings and you knew the game was over once the other team's bullpen came in. It wasn't a matter of if they were going to tie/win, it was when and how. I remember in Game 1 of the 1998 WS, the Yankees were losing 5-2 in the 7th. But because they had made Kevin Brown work so hard, it was only a matter of time before they got into the Padres bullpen. Even the 2 douchebags McCarver and Buck were saying in the 4th or 5th inning that the Yankees were building the pitch count and that San Diego was in trouble. I remember Chipper Jones laughing on the bench during the '99 WS because he knew the Braves were helpless against Rivera. They won 13 or 14 WS games in a row, for crissakes.

also i was a pretty huge yankee fan even when i was like 10- during the 98 season my parents got me this 1996 world series video on vhs and i think i watched it over 100 times- they showed it on YES this season it was really cool bc i still knew a lot of the lines (my fav was always right before jeter got the basehit to drive in girardi they cut to this fan who screamed "lets go jeterrrrr"- idk why prob bc jeter's always been my fav)

this is a pretty random rant but the point was i do remember all the 98+ stuff and watched a ton of games back then too!

I'm 33 (but a young 33! My birthday is right after Christmas).

The best part of the '96 highlight video is when some Braves fan in the stands (it may have even been Maddux's father?) says, "put the hay in the barn, this one is over" as Wohlers came into Game 4, right before the Leyritz HR. I wish I had the video with me so I could check if I'm remembering the details correctly.

I think the Boston series was worse. Matt Williams' point about how the Arizona World Series would have been the Yankees fifth in six years kind of softened the blow for me. Yeah, it was sad that the run with Tino and O'Neill was over, but it was also clear that Giambi would be a Yankees in a month and it seemed like they would just start another run.

Anyway, when I think about 2001 now I just think about how amazing the series was. When I think about 2004 I vomit.

Everybody read the Montero article on Fangraphs today?
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index...orite-position

Quote:
If my projection for Montero holds water, and Austin Romine can manage to put up a .340 wOBA and average defensive performance — no stretch at all for a top 100 prospect — then Austin Romine projects as a more valuable asset to the New York Yankees than Jesus Montero.
He makes a pretty good point in the article, but assumes Montero won't be able to catch due to his size.

I think it's a silly argument to have because none of us, or Bryan Smith, have any idea of Montero can stay behind the plate. And who cares that few players of his size in MLB history have been catchers? For most of MLB history there were no players of his size at any position.

Also, the Billy Butler comparison is bogus. Butler's High-A stats were put up playing in the best hitters' park (Stater Bros. Stadium) in the best hitters' league (the Cal League) in the country. Meanwhile, Montero played in a pitchers' league.

From the trip to the arcade today:

Quote:
“The highlight had to be watching Igawa race on the Indy Car,” Granderson said. “He kept racing up against the wall and damaging his tires. He wouldn’t move off of it. He had his left hand on the wheel and he was just cruising like nothing was wrong. He was doing that for a good three minutes. Everyone was shouting, ‘Turn left! Turn left!’”

Losing to Seattle in '95 is my worst memory as a Yankees fan. I wanted Mattingly to win so badly.

As bad as the Arizona loss was, the Red Sox one was worse. I am actually surprised that AZ got more than 1 vote.
