The Calvin Johnson play was a good call by the rules as they are written. The way I see it, the Calvin Johnson play was rightfully not called a touchdown.
The Hernandez play could or could not have been called as such, depending on when you consider the catch completed. Although the rules are very detailed, there will always be some subjectivity as long as they are written in the English language and decoded by humans.
