Chandler Jones will be more than a sub package guy though - he had gamed this year with no snaps missed

This is way off-topic.

I randomly decided to look at future NFL schedules and it looks like the Patriots have a little run bad coming.

In 2015, the Patriots road games look tough: Denver (AFC West champion), Indianapolis, Houston, Dallas, and NY Giants.

The Pats 2015 home games are much softer: AFC South Champion, Jacksonville, Tennessee, Washington, and Philadelphia.

By chance, the tougher games are always on the road (except Philadelphia / NY Giants).

Also, Peyton Manning won't be playing a regular season game in Foxborough until 2018 at the earliest. The Pats are at AFC West opponent 2015, at AFC West opponent in 2016, and at Denver in 2017.

Seems obvious, but the Pats have to keep Revis, even if they need to make some tough cuts. He has made such a difference for the defense, 3rd most valuable player on the team.

If you are going to break the bank on a non qb, Revis is a solid choice.

Would be fun to go through the roster and list all 53 in order of overall importance.

Just spitballing here:

1. Brady
2. Gronk
3. Revis
4. McCourty
5. Chandler Jones
6. Edelman?

i want to throw some O-line in next but I feel like the unit is basically a package of 5 guys playing above average and no real all-pros.

Would be fun to consider where to put Slater. Im thinking in top 15 for sure. Maybe top 12.

Might be tough as they played so good without him but I consider Hightower for that list. Outside of Revis i dont think any defensive player has played better than hightower and its arguable that Hightower played better during the first half of the season prior to the bears game.

Gostowski>Slater, imo.

Return from injury+he wasn't good against the run+personnel additions means a lesser role for the rest of the year IMO. Maybe not just a sub guy but I think Ayers and, to a lesser extent, Easley take some snaps still.

Jones too high, Slater at top 12 too high, Vollmer might be the only clearly above average OL.

People under-value special teams. Slater is absolutely top 5 special teams player in the league. Scouting reports use the phrase "essentially unblockable" to describe him on KO and Punt teams.

Watch carefully on punts and KOs and notice how often he either makes the play or does something disruptive that allows a teammate to make the play.

I would go:

- Brady
- Revis
- Gronk
- Edelgoat

Then

- DMC
- Hightower
- Collins
- LeFail

Maybe I have to take EdelGoat out of the top 10, because Amendola could probably do ok in the slot.

Vollmer and Stork would both be huge losses.

Vince is probably underrated at the moment.

Damn after Brady, Revis, and Gronk it's hard to do this.

I love Edelman, but DMC, Hightower, Collins, Wilfork all ahead of him.

My first thoughts were that if Gronk goes down, suddenly Edelgoat becomes top 3-ish.

But I really do believe Amendola could step into the slot role and produce, so that's why I made a follow-up post to slide the mini-Goat down out of the top 10.

Gronk goes down and the offense is in deep trouble. Makes defensive guys even more valuable.

When assessing this question, you need to simply ask yourself, would this team change if Player X was out of the game? And there are only 3 answers of "yes" to that question... Brady, Gronk, Revis, in that order. A lot of other players matter, but these are the only three un-expendable guys. That's why are elite. Nobody else is.

not sure who is more valuable, Gronk or Revis. CB in general way more valuable than TE but Gronk really seems to provide a unique value

I think Revis tends to be underrated b/c a lot of the value he provides is not seen or easily visible. he had a ridiculous game on Sunday but he doesn't get to spike the ball or throw people out of the club

Gronk, no need to pose this question. You don't need to underrate Revis in order to understand the offense functions on a completely different level with a healthy Gronk, and the difference of his presence on offense more than overcomes the difference of Revis on defense. But he's 1C in this thought experiment, so I'm not selling him short by any means.

you are just using your opinions as evidence for why your other opinions are correct

whether the offense or defense would lose more if Gronk or Revis went down is pretty hard to say imo

I know there were other injuries on the defense last year but i think there was a pretty clear drop off in the Defense when Talib got hurt and Revis > Talib.

I have Revis over Gronk, and I've confirmed that this is accurate by thinking about it.

Yeah, hes an awesome ST player and it has value, no doubt. Not as much value as an average starter though.

Theyd feel it if guys other than the top 3 went out. Losing McCourty at Free Safety would really **** up their defensive scheme. Wilfork is really important given how much they play sub (run defense vs sub is night and day vs last year). LaFell going out takes an element out of the offense given that Dobson is done for the year.

This team has done pretty well in the past without Revis. It does not do well without (fully healthy) Gronk. Again, pay the man because he transforms the defense. But Gronk transforms the entire team to a greater degree IMO. There are no $tats to back this up, obv.

This is like a whole new level of suck for you.

The defense has been pretty bad for years, and is now suddenly good.

While Gronk is important, the offense has performed near the top of the league both with and without him. (After a period of adjustment.)
