If teams double team him all the time like last season, there will be shooters open.
I can't ever remember Pek getting double teamed.

If we didn't sign Pek we'd need someone to guard real centers. I really like Dieng but he'll have to get stronger before he can guard the Cousins, Pek, Bynum type guys in the NBA. Plus, do you really think it'd be a good idea to go into the season with only 1 center on the roster? Who happens to be a rookie #21 pick in a historically bad draft?

I think so. It's really the only way to find what his value is.

no derrick williams for 1st rnd picks anywhere?... lakers or boston dont have any picks they willing to give up?... boston is blowing their whole roster up & im sure could use a d.williams + a luke ridnour/jjbarrea

I love AK47 a toooon but does it bother anyone else that he's a godawful 3pt shooter playing the 3? Let's not call him Kawhi.

We need PEK period.

Zgoda says PEK is waiting for Howard to sign before he does anything.

There is info in this thread that will tell you what DW's trade value is. Its basically nothing, and it might even be negative. No other teams want to give us anything of value. Hopefully we can get rid of his contract so we can sign AK, but the odds of that happening seem slim. I think there are some people making decisions for the Wolves who over-value him still.

He does everything else well. We have a PF who is a very good 3 point shooter when he's healthy. It would be fun to see what this team could do with this lineup:
Rubio/Barea or Ridnour/Shved
Martin/Bud/Shved
AK47/Bud/Jellybelly/Shabust
Love/Cunningham/AK/C Johnson
PEL/Dieng/C Johnson

That's a solid starting lineup and we'd have a few good backups as well. I think we need to shed one of the backup PGs and DW for that to happen though.

It does sound like trading one of the backup PGs might happen.

Watched every minute of every televised game. Still have several on DVR. Can't ever recall teams double teaming Pek. Not even sure how you'd double him. He catches the ball under the hoop and shoots right away, not on the block like most big guys.

He was doubled basically all season. He had no room to make moves because teams packed their defense in against him because we had no outside shooters.

Wolfson is hypothesizing that the Wolves can still work out a S&T with OKC for Martin. This could be an incredible move.
These guys are suggesting Steamer & Ridnour or Barea for Martin. OKC could then waive Steamer. They do need a backup PG, but I dont know how that would work for them as far as salaries go. That might open up enough room for us to sign AK & PEK.

Two #Twolves notes this morning: 1) it’d be huge if they get can Martin via S&T (could keep MLE) 2) Yes, Flip has interest in Billups.

@akennedy41 Involve a 3rd team that wants Ridnour. Send OKC Stiemsma (non-guaranteed) & a couple 2nd round picks. There are ways to do it.

These guys saw what I saw last year (PEK double teamed):

Quote:
Something else to consider...

With Budinger and Martin being able to stretch the floor and unclog the middle, Pek will probably not see as many doubles and muggings as he did last year. Might help with his ability to stay off the injury list.

Yup.

Even Love is obviously able to slide out to the arc. It will be fun to watch a free-range Pek destroy opponents.

Didn’t McHale “put guys into the torture chamber”? Pek is going to put them into the meat grinder.

^^^ dont okc have jeremy lamb + reggie jackson though?.... btw cha59 stop writing off shabazz!!!, the guy hasn't even played a single game yet come on man

also didn't thomas robinson get traded for a pick?, if so then why is d.williams getting no interest?.. the guy has a 7'1 wingspan, 240lbs, athletic, have a mid range shot... i mean he has upside & stat wise is more or less a alridge no?

as for defending pek i think i saw teams fronting him & basically bigger body centers gave him trouble... he had alot of trouble scoring on d12 + asik & ide have to assume gasol etc as well

pek only worth 10-12mill cause of how weak the center position is right now & everybody getting over payed, but we need him so probably gotta give him his $ even though i dont like it

PEK actually scores well vs other good Cs. Vs Howard last season:

http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278786

http://espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278583
Notice the 2nd game PEK got hurt & scored 8 pts on 4/6 in only 9 mins.

Howard didnt play vs PEK in the other game. The previous season when PEK & Howard matched up, PEK outplayed Howard.

vs HOU, PEK did have one bad game vs Asik. That was the only game they played vs each other, & HOU swarmed PEK.

vs MEM, yeah, PEK struggled. MEM swarmed him and didnt allow him room to do anything. This has more to do with their team D than it does with Gasol. The previous season, PEK held his own or outplayed Gasol when they played MEM.

and who can forget this quote?
Quote:
"Thank God they took out Pekovic."
- Ernest Bynum
The swarming should end with Love healthy and Bud & KMart shooting 3s.

vjl on our 2nd round pick L Brown:

Quote:
My draft model liked him considerably more than either of the players we got in the first round.

On paper he looks like a poor-man’s Rubio. Tons of steals and assists, but really inept scoring.

no doubt flip saw value in L Brown and when he became available in the 2nd round he snapped that **** up like a spider monkey

Flip probably saw him make a steal once in a game.

ESPN Insider apparently says this:

Quote:
Minnesota Timberwolves

Current projection: 55-27 (5th) | Playoff/Title odds: 100%/8% | 5-year WARP: 132.9 (8th)

What their approach appears to be: Win now

What their approach should be: Win now

Plan of action: The Wolves shined in our preseason projections at Basketball Prospectus last season, and after landing Kevin Martin and retaining Chase Budinger, they’re looking good on paper again. Injuries ruined our chances to put that projection to the test in 2012-13; now the possible departure of Nikola Pekovic might take the wind out of Minnesota’s sails in 2013-14.

Pekovic is a restricted free agent and thus is still included here, but you keep hearing reports that Portland is prepping to give Pekovic a huge offer. It’s not my money, so I think Minnesota should match. If the offer is at about $12 million annual value, it’s tough.

Maybe I’ll get my wish: Per source, there has been contact between Flip/the #Twolves and Matt Barnes’ camp.
As much as I dislike Barnes because he's an *******, he's not a bad player. I think he would be a good fit for us and he will probably be cheap.

yea you probably pickup barnes for like 2mill a year & he will add defense & toughness... if we are to lose ak47 its good to have that guy on the roster

Sounds like PEK might still be in play for POR! If the POR and MIN front offices met in person do you think it would erupt into fisticuffs?

Maybe if Kahn was still here. I'm sure he pissed a lot of people off all over the league, and POR had to be at the top of the list.

I heard POR wasnt far enough under the cap to offer PEK over ~$9 mil the other day. Did they end up shedding any salary?
