Finally some great news for the football program. We received a commitment from Ray Vinopal, a safety from Ohio. Take that Bowling Green and Kent St. You have to look elsewhere now. Who says UM can't go out of state and steal local kids away from the instate powers? We went into Louisiana and got Drew Dileo and Carvin Johnson right from under Tulane's nose, and now go into Ohio to steal Vinopal from Bowling Green.

On a serious note, it seems weird to take a commitment from such a low rated player when we only have a few scholarships left, and supposedly have a decent shot at a few 4 star type players. I'd like to trust the coaches, but at a certain point the head-scratching moves pile up.

Rich Rod was stupid for pursuing DJ Woods a couple years ago too

According to Rivals, DJ Woods also had offers from Nebraska, Penn St. Auburn, Iowa, Wisconsin and West Virginia. I don't remember the recruiting of DJ Woods, but considering several major programs apparently offered, were UM fans really upset that we were pursuing him?

Yup. Too small to play in the Big Ten, 3 star, etc.

Vinopal was a first-team all-state safety in Ohio this year and has an electronically timed 4.41. He's supposed to be play pretty physical too.

I think there's a great chance I have my head up my ass on this one, but why is Michigan messin' around with 2star players? Is this a situation where I think Michigan is better than they really are cuz I have my fan glasses on? Is Michigan simply not a top program any more?

I'm with JackWhite and ILOVEPOKER and I've said as much earlier in the thread. This class has way too 2 star types, too many projects. This guy isn't even two-star with competing good offers, he's just two-star pursued by MAC basement dwellers.

At this point it's just "trust RR knows more than everyone else." Okay, hopefully, I guess. Raise your hand if you're just as confident now that this is true as the day he was hired.

Obviously, the losing's not helping with recruiting, but they are still recruiting pretty well. Rich Rod and his staff are real particular about the certain type of player they want. At this point, they can't be too picky with waiting for 5 stars.

Plus, people are acting like Lloyd and his staff never took 2 and 3 stars which just isn't true. The following rankings are from Scout...

In 2006, Michigan had 3 2 stars (one kicker). 2 in 2007.

In 2008, Rich Rod filled the class out and had 2 2 stars, one being George Morales who never really got a scholarship, so 1 in 2008. In 2009, they had 2 2 stars, one being Witty who arguably would have been a 3-4 star without injury. This is their 3rd 2 star in 2010, one of being a QB in Jones.

They may be taking a few more 3 stars, but that's a product of on-field performance. Winning will solve that just fine. Plus, they're still getting big names.

Also, Jonas Mouton and Boo Boo were 5 star guys and Mike Williams was a 4 star Army All-American. Rankings aren't perfect.

Also, I really like Dileo, I think he could play sooner rather than later. Not sure about Williamson (who is the other 2 star on Scout), sounds like he might end up on the defensive side of the ball.

Good post. I'm glad to know that the 2stars are not getting out of hand. I don't worry about the rankings on offense since I trust RR more than the rankings. On defense, I just hope we get more 4stars now and in the future.

I'm definitely scared. I'm still not sure if there's enough evidence that RR and staff are taking defense seriously. Our D class seems very comparable to MSU. If all we're gonna usually have is a MSU defense then I expect tOSU to beat us 70% of the time.

kid is from Mooney, who just won yet another state title 35-7. last week they beat Steubenville (who Devin Gardner squeeked by) by 5 touchdowns.

if anything, he'll show up well coached (PJ Fecko is one of Ohio's best), and with the attitude of a champion.

that said, this blind-sided me too, as i live 8 minutes from ysu, where Mooney plays.

Yeah, Mooney's legit.

They had a 4.4 2 star white guy playing safety for them about 5 years ago...

Hey if the kid has a legit electronic 4.4 he has potential imo. He'll probably be the greyshirt.

yep.

i brought up Kyle on mgb on the 'omgwhoisthis?' front page responses...trust me, if there were ever a 2-star white guy from Ohio who could end up buckling cats in a couple years, it'd be a 2-star white guy from Mooney.

i can't say i've seen this kid in person, i'm actually a little pissed about that because he's played within 6 miles of me most of his H.S. career, but i'm totally comforable in saying that his coach puts out players.

Kyle McCarthy, if you didn't know already, is fixing to be a star next year.

Fecko is a stud, and i'm going to put myself out there to state: Mooney kids are well-coached (+1), have played in big games (+1), and were at Mooney to begin with because they were good enough to escape the Youngstown City League (East and Chaney) (+1).

he looks like nothing, i know. but in 3 years, hmm...

I don't see McCarthy being a star in the NFL, but I think he's been one of the only bright spots on ND's defense this year along with Teo.

Meh, Smith doesn't want to play LB, he never has. You have to have guys that are going to fully buy into what you're trying to do.
