Overall I was really impressed with Carolina, hopefully this is a wakeup call to the defense which hasn't looked good either week and is leaving guys wide open every other play, though I really feel like they figured everything out on the second half.

Best news of this game was McCarthy going for it on 4th down early in the game and actually PUTTING THE GAME AWAY by running that pass to Jordy in the 4th quarter w/ 3:30 left instead of just trying to grind the clock down like he always does. So maybe he's learning?
I know. I could not believe what I was seeing. I was 99% positive run-run-run-punt was coming.

Didn't occur to me at the time, too busy being thrilled about GB backdoor covering -10.5 in a pool. (Less thrilled @ Cam Manning's followup ) Good point though, MM never does that. He went for it on 4th down when he usually wouldn't either, hopefully won't be results oriented about failing.

I'm cool with giving up 400 yards to Cutlahhhhhhhhhhhhh assuming they're of the 25-49/400/1/4 variety.

The most yards Cutler has ever thrown against GB is 277. And that game was 17-36/277/1/4.

Ok.. so.. didn't get to see the game.. besides the INTs, were we THAT bad on pass coverage? I know Tramontana was out.. but seems like we really like giving up a ton of yards in the air..

During the first half the pass coverage was awful. Packers didn't look prepared at all, especially during the first drive

I'm not really worried yet as Cam really did look great and stood up well against the type of pressure that usually murders rookie QBs, and Drew Brees obviously is awesome. If Cutler tears them apart then we'll get worried

meh, they were running routes where 1 or 2 guys were going out and everyone else was back blocking.

we did a poor job of getting to cam and we made poor adjustments on defense. that changed somewhere around the mid 2nd quarter.

cam didnt do anything any qb given 7 seconds everytime they drop back couldnt do.

Cam did look good avoiding the sack and had a few moves where you're positive he's going down or is going to throw it away but winds up with a completion anyway

All I can say is, good thing he kept throwing to Woodson!!

Sucks so hard for Collins. Hope it isn't career ending.

With Peprah starting, Burnett needs to step up. I'm sure Dom will play Burnett deeper now...since he's miles ahead of Peprah in coverage. He looked good versus Carolina, except on the one play he was beaten deep 1 on 1.

Might see Woodson at safety in the 3-4 base and Peprah on the bench. Peprah looked horrid in the 15 or so plays he took over for Collins.

Gordy is a CB so I don't know why we'd sign him. Levine would likely be the guy brought back.

I wouldn't mind kicking the tires on Sharper so we could keep Burnett at SS. Peprah is way too slow to play FS.

TT isn't one to sign vets normally, but in this case it could make perfect sense if Sharper has a good workout and looks like he is in very good shape. We did acquire a vet in Ho Green last year. Even at 35 I think Sharper could still play a solid FS in our system.

Sharper was god-awful last season, that's why no one will touch him.

How often do we play just 4 DBs? Anyone know the snaps by game for Shields, Woodson, and Tramon when they're all healthy? Shields plays a ton, right?

Last year we played a nickel (meaning Wood, Tramon, and Shields) 75% of the time. Our typical lineup is a 2-4-5 with Raji as one of the down DL with a pass rushing DL next to him (last year Jenks).

Shields was basically a starter playing 75% of the snaps. If the opposing team was in a traditional set, Wood played the TE. If they were in a multiple WR set, he played the WR in the slot. Much of Wood's value came from being inside so often which allowed him to blitz and support the run like a freakin OLB. If we move him to safety, he loses a lot of value.

He also struggled with injury. If he's fully healthy, he can still play at 35.

He had micro-fracture surgery last year in the offseason. He should be fully recovered from that at this point.

He's actually an excellent fit as a ballhawking FS with good range in our D.

I don't expect us to sign him, but I'd be interested to see how he'd do if we did bring him in.

Maybe...say what you will about Bush, he's a good physical tackler who could probably fill in the run defense/blitzing role that Woodson has excelled in. Is he as good in coverage as Woodson? No, but he's covering TE's and slot receivers...he'll do. He obviously doesn't have the football IQ or hands/playmaking ability of Woodson. But I don't think it will be a disaster. I hope.

Aytumious,

So when we had only two corners in the game were they usually Tramon and Woodson? If so it seems a little weird because my understanding is that at this point Tramon and Shields are the better cover corners compared to Woodson.

Yep. In our regular 3-4, Wood and Tramon are outside at CB.

In the game against NO, we were in our 3-4 on only one play all game. 90+% of the time we were in a 2-4-5 which had Tramon and Shields outside with Wood on the slot WR or against the TE. I'm not sure what the numbers were last game, but the overwhelming majority of the time it was a 2-4-5 yet again. We play that because Woodson is so dangerous as a blitzer inside and he also provides run support like a top flight strong safety (while still being a great man to man cover CB). Most teams wouldn't be able to get away with playing only two DL, but we do it as our normal defensive set.

Am I correct in saying that the Packers are quite unusual in that usually the nickel back is the one who lines up in the slot?
Green Bay Packers - Fired McCarthey Quote

There are a few teams that put one of their starting corners in the slot in nickel situations. Barber in tampa...Winfield in minny. Finnegan is a starter and plays the slot for the Titans; though he's like the 4th best corner on the team. The Eagles are toying with the idea of moving Asomugha to the slot as well.

Oh and can we talk about how bad Erik Walden is? Dude has been completely invisible. Can't wait for So'oto to steal his job.

Jarius Wynn has filled in nicely for Neal. Bishop is around the ball on every play. Shields isn't playing poorly; he's just allowing a bunch of catches for no reason.

Forgive my total ignorance, but is Sherrod still injured? And does he see much playing time when healthy?
