I never claimed that Pena was a good hitter. I said that he deserved a shot to come back for another year after hitting .300 for us. You don't **** on people who deliver for you!
Johnson was very good last night and if he continues like that, he might be our best late inning option. 94-95 painting the exact bottom of the strikezone is awesome. The results are just variance. Sometimes you make a great pitch and they still hit it out. Add to this that Avila called yet for another throw over to 1st before calling for an offspeed pitch, so everyone in the ballpark knew what was coming.
Unfortunately this team won't even make it to the playoffs, so we don't have to speculate who will take over the closer-job after Nathan's ERA baloons up to 7+.
Velocity is always a good indicator for health. Robbie Ray hit 94-96 at his debut and now he is around 91-93. Maybe he tried too hard at AAA and got himself injured. I wouldn't give up on him yet, but right now he is obviously uneffective. Take a fresh look at him next spring.
Krol had a huge drop in velo also, probably the most significant of them all. Although he seems to be recovering slightly during his last two outings, I think that there is definitely something wrong with him physically.
Last but not least, Verlander hit 95 once during his last outing and 94 a couple of times. That's within his usual range for the first inning. Chances are he just sucks and they had to pull the plug on him and were forced to make up some kind of story to explain it. I can't see much difference to his other outings, even though he claims that he had the worst stuff on his career. Maybe he meant the whole season.
