hmm well it's probably what he's been waiting for. I still don't like what he's doing with his swing but if the results are there then whatever.

Heyward's plate discipline was all I would hear about before he came up to the show.

It was pretty damn rare for such a young player. It seemed like he got away from that last season, so I hope you guys are right and he's back in 2010 form.

I have a feeling this is going to be an exciting year, with such a young team I could see us streaking wins and losses a lot, hopefully more of the former.

Yeah I know what you are saying and see it too, but at this point it hasn't really been an issue. As long as he is hitting the balls on the outside corner of the plate hard it doesn't really matter if he's going the other way with it or not. Think about basically every player that defenses use massive shifts on, they aren't hitting that ball the other way either. So far this year he's been able to hit that ball hard either up the middle or pull-side. It's when he attempts to pull pitches farther away than that (like Saturday when he popped out to Morgan) that there is an issue. Yesterday he went the other-way with that same type of pitch, so it's not a huge point of exploitability (especially since he's just taking that pitch for a ball most of the time). He's shown a lot more plate coverage so far this season, so I don't think we necessarily need to worry about his propensity to pull the ball at such a high frequency. So long as he's hitting the inside strikes like he did yesterday and the outside strikes like he's done so far he could have an incredible year given his already solid (if not great) batter's eye.

He does, at times, seem to miss the pitch RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE (or slightly middle-in), but I guess that's more of a flukey thing every now and then than any sort of major flaw in his swing.

He could totally have a great year with this swing. I just think that his old swing was more optimal and had the potential to be more productive while putting up more consistent results because he was hitting the ball harder.

He's not catching up to those fastballs because his swing isn't as quick as it used to be. Instead of the bat taking the direct path to the ball he's trying to go around the ball and pull it...i guess with the intention of hitting for more power, even though imo his old swing had just as much power potential if not more than this one.

Basically i'm just frustrated because instead of a 8-9+ war beast he's gonna be a 6-7 war beast probably lol

He's also swinging at a lot more pitches than he did in 2010...while actually seeing less strikes.

2010- Swing %- 38.5, Zone %- 45.3
2011- Swing %- 43.7, Zone %- 44.6
2012- Swing %- 43.6, Zone %- 39.5

I dunno maybe he can make it work and be more productive somehow. I wish he never changed anything though.

yeah it's very likely that his swing/approach is better now than last year but worse than 2010.

Just following on Gameday, but 5 curveballs in a row seems a bit much.

Went to the game last night -- Hanson was never the same after the hard come-backer. Heyward seems like he's getting things worked out, but falls back into bad habits and thinks he has to swing at everything in pressure situations. I have a really hard time getting into the head of Fredi sometimes. Jack Wilson may be uglier than Willie McGee.

JJ didn't look too sharp today, fortunately we're hitting and hopefully the bullpen can hold down a win for us.
