This has probably been done before, and better, but take it or leave it:

-13 teams, 30 players per team. C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CIF, MIF, OFx5, Util, and P (SP or RP) x9 I think, can't access the site right now.

-Team salary cap of $1000. Minimum salary of $4.

-There's a pre-season auction for free agents. You're committed to a player's salary for a season (unless you negotiate another team paying it as part of a trade), but at the end of each season you have an option to keep the player with a 10% pay increase, or cut him with no penalty. You can exercise this option up to four times, so a free agent can be signed to your team for as many as five years.

-There's a weekly auction (Sunday nights) for free agents during the season, but you just submit a number once and the highest wins, there's no active bidding like in the pre-season. A free agent that had been on an active roster at the beginning of the season and cut is a contract for the rest of the year only. A free agent that wasn't on an active roster at the beginning of the season is subject to normal free agent contract terms. You can't pick up rookies (but you will).

-We have a pre-season rookie draft, snake, reverse order of standings. You can call up a rookie whenever he's on a major-league roster, but as soon as you call him up he's in his first year of service. You have to call up a rookie at the beginning of the first season he's no longer rookie-eligible; that is, >= 130 AB for a hitter, >= 50 IP or >= 30 appearances for a pitcher. Rookies can be kept for up to six years on the following payscale: $4, $4, $4, $10, $30, $50.

That's the essential stuff, at least. So here's what's gonna happen:

1) Every team will decide which of their rookies they'll promote, which they'll keep, and which they'll cut. (late February?)
2) We'll start the rookie draft. The rookie draft pool will be all rookies not currently on a team's minor-league roster. (early March or so)
3) Every team will decide which of their major-league players they'll keep, and which they'll cut. (early March)
4) We'll start the free agent auction. The free agent pool will be comprised of players who weren't on a major-league roster last year, players who were on a major-league roster last year but then were cut mid-season, players who were on a major-league roster at the end of the season but were just cut, and players who lost their rookie eligibility but weren't on anyone's minor-league roster. (mid-March)

I started updating the sheet today, i'll be putting finishing touches on it over today/tomorrow but you can take a look now to see roughly what teams will look like, and if you see anything off point it out to me.

edit:

Things i'm aware of that need to be fixed: Minor league rosters being displayed, minor leaguers no longer eligible, available salary cap figures, and rookie draft board. could all be fixed this afternoon depending on my attention span.

Also, I'm pretty sure it's just 10% salary increases across board, I think that's what we did last off season.

--

Also, I think I like the proposal for ditching 5th place payout.. not sure about the draft pick thing - I like the idea of making every spot in standings worth playing for, but not wild about penalizing bad teams/making it harder for them to rebuild.

Thank you levarkin, that's a big help and I now know I'm way out of my depth here so I'll be drinking all weekend and figuring out what the hell I'm doing.

I also propose that 5th Place gets first pick (or 6th if we keep the $55 bucks thing), 6th place gets 2nd pick, 7th gets third pick as a way to make it so that every place matters and you can't purposely throw games to get the top pick. There is incentive for everyone in the standings to improve.

Thoughts?
Im fine either way with the $55. Although I generally agree with your 2nd point (draft pick order), I think it wouldn't be something we could just enact this year. Clearly there are certain teams who have already begun a rebuild process and this new setting would definitely throw a wrench in their plans.

Exit, ESPN page is currently down, but I know that some of the final transactions of 2015 need to be updated. For instance, off memory, pretty sure I dropped Jean Machi before the end of the season. Just a heads up, and I'll let you know when I see ESPN page restored. I think it may be a handful of players involved.

fwiw everyone on my active roster is available. no fire sale or anything but would like to move some bodies in return for youth.. Matt Carpetner, Matt Holliday, Brandon Belt, Lucas Duda, Shin-Soo Choo probably the most notable, but theres some other value to be had too.

also cheap...

C Buchholz (BOS) $10 year 5
B McCarthy (LAD) $9 year 3
I Nova (NYY) $7 year 2

Could also move:

C Granderson (NYM) $51 year 2

Haha so I finally looked at my roster and I don't hate it, I don't know what that says about me in regards to fantasy baseball but whatever. Going to be getting acquainted with the rules tonight and will be looking to start slanging players like a hopper in West Baltimore tomorrow.

Also can someone change my name to B&B Enterprises

Agree on ditching a 5th place payout. I too like the idea of the 5th-13th order in the standings "worth it" but sometimes your team just stinks so I'd prefer to keep draft picks as-is.

Figure I'll at least mention these three before I probably cut them. If you want cost certainty on any of them I'll move em for "cheap" ..

Cueto $173
McGee $90
Melancon $85

I do have one rules question/clarification for you guys. I got Dilson Herrera who I gotta auto-promote, but he could start the year in the minors.

Because of when we have our auction I will have to make him one of my 30 guys on the roster when the auction begins? And if he is shipped to the minors when the real life season starts I can at least get him off my 30-man MLB roster for 2016 and have an open spot to pick up someone in FAAB then?

I think you have to promote for auction and can then send back down if he starts the season in minors.
