What explains this (I think) is the fact that so far 47% of the first pitches thrown to him are strikes, which is the first time in his career that number has been under 60. There is marked improvement in his discipline to be sure but this at least explains his completely unsustainable 21% walk rate
So when that adjusts and he starts facing more 0-1 counts than 1-0 I think you'll start to see his strikeouts jump back closer to 30% and his walks drop. Currently he has a 43% k rate on at bats that start 0-1 vs 12% on at bats that start 1-0 (although he also has a 25% walk rate on at bats that start 0-1 which, even with a small sample, is pretty ****ing impressive for a hitter with his reputation and telling for how his discipline has evolved. By comparison, last year he had a walk rate of 6.9% on 0-1 at bats)
Now all that being said, he has always had big talent as a hitter and has underperformed massively. He's clearly a much better hitter, and more patient, as an Astro than he was at any point of his career and is hitting in a gin position cleanup behind Altuve/springer/correa and his spot at 4 isn't really in jeopardy anytime soon. I expect his average to drop to the .250 range but there's no reason to think he isn't going to post career numbers in the volume categories and he could easily finish as a top 50 or better player. Basically his ceiling is what gomez was supposed to be with more homers and fewer steals
