I'm doing an auction for the first time in football, and would like some thoughts on my overall strategy and preparation. This is my first year in the league. The league did an auction last year but before that did draft. The league is about an even mix of decently thinking players and marks that don't know they're the marks.
I do not have access to the results of last year's auction, but I have learned that the highest paid player last year was Peterson at $92 and a couple other running backs went in the 70s.
League: 10 team full PPR live auction. $300 salary cap.
Roster: QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, RB/WR/TE, RB/WR/TE 8 man bench.
I used
Elbobertos spreadsheet to compile projected dollar values customized to our rosters and point settings, and will do a final version the day before the draft.
Positional thoughts and budget:
QB - WAIT! I'm totally fine getting a 8-12th ranked QB for very little as I think there's a lot of value per dollar there. Budget $5-10
RB - Get a top 4 stud. Then get another top 20 guy. Figuring $75 for RB1 and around $50 for RB2.
WR - Get a top 10 guy and a top 20. Figuring $60 for WR1 and around $45 for WR2
Flexes - Looking for solid RBs or WRs that go around $20ish each
TE - Cheap. $1-5 UNLESS Graham is undervalued due to people not understanding positional advantage and scarcity. My spreadsheet I compiled has Jimmy valued at $65. This is the one situation in which I'm contemplating actually nominating a player I want in the first round, because whether or not I have Graham will affect the makeup of the rest of my strategy. Good idea?
D/ST $1
K $1
Bench: Whatever's left. Not paying for depth. Want more of a stars/scrubs strat.
Theoretical example rosters (based on the spreadsheet values I made). Don't read it as "I'm taking this player no matter what" but more as "I expect the players to go for around this or so"
QB Cutler/Brady/Ryan 8
RB1 McCoy/Charles/Peterson/Forte 76
RB2 Murray/Ball/Lacy 54
WR1 Green/Marshall/Jones 60
WR2 Cobb/Nelson 43
Flex1 Kendall Wright etc. 21
Flex2 Rashad Jennings etc. 20
TE Ertz/Gates/Clay/Bennett 3
K/D/Bench 15
Appreciate all thoughts. Thanks guys.
