Hey, I often hear that strong players say, that the reason for their strong results is their strong theoretical understanding of their game.

What do they mean by that? Where are good sources to learn more about expect of this forum, especially appliable theory, ( i am a nl player). Where does a player with knowing game theory has an advantage to the player that has learned the game by gaining experience and less understanding of theory

There are many aspects of poker which are counter-intuitive, or at least that you may not pick up on from experience alone. Especially since there is so much chance involved, it's easy for your experience to lead you astray. If you hit the first 20 flush draws you ever chase, your experience may tell you that having a flush draw is a sure thing, whereas if you had a basic theoretical understanding of the game you would know that you had just been getting very lucky up to this point.

Not all poker theory is "game theory" though. Game theory is a branch of mathematics that deals with human conflict and interaction, and thus can have some very usefull applications in poker.

Oh, if you're interested in game-theory in poker, "The Mathematics of Poker" by Chen and Ankenman is the bible.

PM'ed you OP for a source of advanced game theory.

the best thing about AGT is that as you begin to understand to concepts, you can see it playing out and can apply it to many other aspects of life.

here's a good intro to the field, too, if you prefer video over reading:

http://oyc.yale.edu/economics/econ-159

altho those lectures go through a lot of standard background stuff before they start developing the tools necessary to analyze poker games
