Poker in 2024 - reading material after a hiatus? Poker in 2024 - reading material after a hiatus?

Hi all,

I stopped playing poker properly/regularly around 2013-15 and having played my first live game for a long time recently, I've started getting the itch again.

By way of background, I used to play micro (up to nl25), 6-max, and I was a winning player although admittedly nl25 started getting tough to beat. I used to multitable and ground out around 1,000 hands a day so I had some decent volume but nothing compared to others. As a result, I had a fairly good foundation but I've become so rusty since stopping.

As part of my re-introduction, I'll revisit some of the early material that I learnt from (Harrington on cash games II, for example) but I know poker has moved on quite a bit since 2013-15. Back in those days, people were talking about GTO but it wasn't anywhere near as prevelant today, especially with solvers in play.

Are there any books/threads that one would recommend to get back up to speed for 2024?

My focus will be on live poker, as I simply don't have the time with work commitments to grind online, but I still want to re-learn as if I'm an online grinder.

I have Applications of No-Limit Hold 'em By Matthew Janda on my bookshelf somewhere gathering dust, is this still relevant material?

Thanks!

I would not recommend any books. In my opinion your best bet is to attempt to network with some other players and just get a subscription to something like runitonce.

I don't sub but gtow (https://app.gtowizard.com/) would probably get you up to speed on their free content alone.

Andrew Brokos' Play Optimal Poker vol 1 is good if you don't understand game theory yet. The main thing is to embrace the solver era and either sub to gtow or buy a cheap solver (like gto+) yourself so you can start mapping out something you can understand. Most good poker theory content is fragmented across various training/video sites but a lot of the free stuff/articles etc are decent.

I see where you're coming from. Do you have any views on the Janda book?

I understand that theory moves quickly and there's nothing quite like an active/dynamic discussion, but I've always found that having some source material from which I can study has always helped me build a foundation for more knowledge.

I think in the absence of a solver the way Janda approaches game theory is reasonable and it provides a good context of a pre-solver era way of thinking... but books are just not a great means of portraying poker content these days as most information is data in spreadsheets or tables... it's much better conveyed in a video format.

Modern Poker Theory by Michael Acevedo is good.

I have been out since the late 2000's since the U.S. banned internet poker, got the itch again after the WSOP this year, anyway I asked around and the most recommended was Modern Poker Theory by Acevedo.

Got it yesterday so we will see how it goes.

I used to play a lot of online poker back around 2013 and then quit. I'm now looking to get back into the game. I was wondering if you would be interested in staying in touch? We can share learning resources and help each other out with our game. Feel free to DM me. I couldn't send you a DM as the site did not allow me to.
