HU poker and beating the rake? HU poker and beating the rake?

I am new to HU and wanna play as low as possible as I learn HU, but I do not wanna have to beat the rake as well. At stakes for HU NLHE is the rake not much of an issue. We are assuming 5% rake capped at 50c. I think 20nl is too low, but is 50nl where I need to start or is 100nl better? As a learning player the rake is something that would hurt my winrate largely as I am learning.

HU Sit n Gos have less rake if you play low stakes.
So if you start out playing 20 per day you only need to win 11 to be on the plus side.
Start at the $5 + 0.25 games and not the $2 ones.

In cash games, a basic guideline is that if raked amount IS GREATER than the %10 of the total amount on the table, I leave. I say guideline... cuz its not a rule, its a guideline.

This makes sense cuz the rake keeps pace with add-ons onto the table.. and if there are no add-ons, its a stale game/ good opponent, so you should leave anyways.

So say 50nl HU , we have 100$ total on the table and rake is capped at .5 we are good to play on these tables?

This means also I can play SS just fine.

On stars at least the $2 ones are $2+.20, so as a percentage you're paying WAY more rake than with the $5+.25

Yep, $2 has 10% rake while the $5 has 5%

sorry i didnt clarify, i meant apply this rule to cash game heads up, but i suppose you can apply it to HU SNGS as well... if the rake is ovver %10, it isnt worth playing, you're better off saving up that $2+25 so you can paly a $5+.30 or whhatever it is..

You can find a lot of HUSNGs with 5% or less rake (especially at $100+ limits) even if you're a US player (yes, I've seen these as low as $1.05), so playing anything costlier is just a waste of money, unless you have some sick rakeback deal or the network is incredibly soft. As for HU cash, I don't play it online, but from what I've seen, I wouldn't suggest playing seriously below 50NL. Compared to FR or 6-max, you play a lot more hands and make a lot more bets, so the rake drains your stack much faster and if you don't regularly hit the cap, you're going to lose some serious money.

10NL and 25NL is the place to start, 50NL is the transitional level between majority fish and ****ty regs and majority good regs.

I don't mean that they pull %10 every hand, I mean that if over %10 of the net amount on the table has been pulled, at that point it isn't worth sitting anymore because the "house" is pulling more then either you or your opponent can expect to make at this point, and if this limit has been exceeded, you're up against a worthy opponent and are basically just flipping raked coins(take a 50/50 prop with -105 or -110 and you'll be losing in the long run)

FWIW, when I played 100NL HU on Stars, I paid about 6.5 cents/hand in rake. This compares to the average player paying about 7 cents/hand at 100NL 6max on Stars.

Given that much higher winrates are possible at HU vs 6max, I'd say the rake is very beatable.
