Hi Everyone. I am a beginning player with loads of questions.

First, I am reading Ed Miller's The Course and I have a question about something he is talking about on page 78. He says that when the SPR is low (big pot compared to stack) in loose games, it's much more valuable to make top pair on the flop than it is to flop a straight draw.

Why is this?

Also another question...he keeps talking about "3 betting." What does "3 betting" mean?

Probably because in low SPR situations you don't have the implied odds to make calling with a straight draw profitable and with top pair (even with bad kickers) you don't have to worry about reverse implied odds.

A 3-bet is a raise after an open from another player.

The BB is usually bet 1, the next raise (first to open the betting preflop) is bet 2, so the next raise after that is bet 3.

Because when you hit your straight draws you need to get paid for the poor odds of hitting it. You aint getting paid with a low spr.
