Antes Antes

I feel kinda stupid posting a basic ante question, but up until recently I've always played on sites that didn't have them. So my question is..

If I'm not good at loosening up when antes come, can I just play tight still but as if the BB is bigger? For instance, if antes made the pot 1.5X larger, can I open raise 4.5x instead of 3x, defend my BB against a 3x raise as if it were a min raise, etc, or is there some downside of this I'm missing?

I'm familiar with M so this isn't really about when to push/fold, just about whether I can adjust preflop so it plays as if the antes weren't there.

You have to consider that the pot is bigger PF because of the antes. It may not make a difference to you, but other people are going to loosen up because of a juicier starting pot. You're going to have to increase your pre-flop raising range because you really don't want to encourage limpers who feel they are already invested by posting an ante.

Yeah, loosening up starting range is the standard response to dealing with antes, but I'm just asking about a different method if I don't want to loosen my starting range (because I'm a nit).

Instead of playing more hands, will making preflop raise sizes significantly bigger and defending blinds as if preflop raises are smaller compensate for antes well? If my M is still above push/fold mode is this:

SB: 500 BB:1000 Ante 100, 10 players, Open raise to 5000

Functionally equivalent to this:

SB: 500 BB: 1000 No Ante, 10 players, Open raise to 3000

And can I just do things like that instead of playing more hands?

Yes one get better odds to call in the blinds when the antes are high and people raises are small compared to the inital pot size.

I assume you're talking about a tourney, where antes kick in at some point. When the stakes escalate and/or the table gets short-handed you've got to loosen up PF, that's tournament 101. You don't have to go total LAG, just make small adjustments. Theoretically, you could just jack up your open raise percentage and still maintain a nit hand range, but what fun is that? Take it from a reformed rock, sometimes you gotta get in there and gamble, and pot odds are the best reason. Nit poker is no fun, you might as well play bridge at the old folks home.

I'd gladly play bridge at the old folks' home if the money was good.
