The biggest barrier to entry for me is the fact that this game has been studied by people much smarter than I, not to mention thousands of years of strategy development.

I move my pawn forward two spaces and all of a sudden my opponent says ah, I see you are playing the Belarusian PIT maneuver and then they play the Sicilian Deep Dive and in 20 moves I get checkmated.

Any advice?

Manage your expectations and play opponents closer to your current skill level?

What are your goals in chess? Be world champion? If so yeah you’re probably right. However if you put zero effort into chess (which is fine) then you’re just going to be matched up with other people who put zero effort (assuming online play) and the goal should be just to have fun. Want to play some crazy opening that’s not optimal? Do it if you find it fun.

Any time you take up a new hobby in a serious way, you're going to experience this. You start playing poker and you bet? You get checkraised, lose the hand, and the guy tells you I put your range at 10% bluff, 40% thin value, 30% semibluff, that's why I donked the turn to balance my calling range, etc etc.

Knowing that there's immeasurable depth and information to learn should be the exciting part of taking up chess. If you want to play and know everything immediately, it's not your game.

And I'll say this - you might think you play a move and your opponent suddenly recalls the last 40 years of theoretical development. In reality, it's more usually like that monkey banging two cymbals together in Homer Simpson's head.

The good news is that your results will reflect your ability and the effort you put into it over time.

In poker, an expert can be schooled by a schoolboy.

Love this.

Also, recognise your results reflect the effort you put into it.

I played today. Won one game and lost five. Just a wood pusher.

But I absolutely refuse to start studying the game again.

I have more important things to occupy my time than chess study.

Hope this was of some help.

I got it, I mean, I got significantly better results compared to my own performance before, when I just decided to attack my main weakness, which was blundering away pieces at key parts of the game: tactics, tactics, tactics before anything else. I don´t remember anymore the name or have the link to the pdf, this was 15 years ago, but there was this american OTB master (I think) who devised a plan to improve his own tactics in just a matter of weeks. It was pretty much a few dumb "vision" exercises, followed by solving tactical puzzles over and over again for hours every day. I did it with no expectations, and it worked: got from LOL to pretty good online ratings in the server I used to play, freechess.

Pattern recognition is the name of the game.

I´m saying that because from your post your main problem doesn´t look like knowing or not knowing opening x or y, if you´re always getting checkmated in 20 moves over and over again, you´re making basic blunders in key moments of the game.

personally had never played chess, watched the youtube serie of chessbrah called building habits, he plays games with a set of easy rules to follow to build strong foundations, it’s not always the best move but it’s rarely a blunder or a mistake, made it to 1300 in blitz from being clueless within 3 months, then I stopped because it was too addictive

as mentioned above, what is your goal? Use your brain a bit, ie pass some time while waiting in a que or bus? Use your brain alot?

Apps like Chess.com automatically rate your play and then will match you with opponents with similar ratings, so you will automatically have a good game. Sometimes they will still know some tricks, but since the games are rated, the trick advantage will be shortlived and you will get good games.

Some people just want the illusion that, because a thing is new, that they can be one of the best in the world at it with relatively little effort.

Yeah the original question seems a bit pointless? How can you do anything that has ever been researched if you are not hard working and/or smart thus probably won't contribute anything new? Just do what you enjoy.

Seems like you do not enjoy it all that much. If that is the case, why bother? I never seemed to get into fishing (although I do know how to fish), so I do not fish.

Sounds like you need to just get better at fishing.

Don't worry about that, you're not a world class player and probably never will be, so just have fun with the game and learn the basics first
