Days or possibly weeks before our encounter, he'd won the world blitz championship at St John, defeating Vaganian in the final by 3.5-.5, an event which had, amongst others, Kasparov, who won the preceding year.
To clarify, I was then 2300; I haven't played a game of chess since spring of 2001, so would likely be about 1250 Elo now(on a good day).
