I just beat chessmaster getting rook odds (he started with no rook queenside)
I traded everything and managed to come in the endgame with an unstoppable pawn and a king vs only a king.
So, is this standard or am I that good?

mmm to much advantage i think.
Im playing a 24 game match against Fritz without 1 of his minor piece and i still find it too much (6 games without his QuennNight, 6 for KN, QB and KB). Till far, im up +2-0=4

Nakamura can beat rybka 3 with that handicap most of the time in bullet. A good goal I think.

fwiw, GM Larry Kaufman says (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_h...ing_equivalent):

Quote:
[T]he Elo equivalent of a given handicap degrades as you go down the scale. A knight seems to be worth around a thousand points when the "weak" player is around IM level, but it drops as you go down. For example, I'm about 2400 and I've played tons of knight odds games with students, and I would put the break-even point (for untimed but reasonably quick games) with me at around 1800, so maybe a 600 value at this level. An 1800 can probably give knight odds to a 1400, a 1400 to an 1100, an 1100 to a 900, etc. This is pretty obviously the way it must work, because the weaker the players are, the more likely the weaker one is to blunder a piece or more. When you get down to the level of the average 8 year old player, knight odds is just a slight edge, maybe 50 points or so.

Well played on what time controls? It is not as easy as you might think I have won several games where I started with no rook against novice/beginners while losing to some gm's where they played w/o knight..the skill difference between gm's and other players is pretty huge so winning against them w/ rook handicap is good start.
Do you have elo? What do you think your play strength would be?

One GM friend told me that 1 point of handicap is mostly equivalent of 100 elo points ie 2400 player should beat 2700 if the latter started w/o a knight the game should be at least equal.

I think a 2200 would crush a 2800 if he started a knight up, that really is a huge handicap.

edit: Larry Kaufman seems to agree with me

i would propbet on this all day long
2200=/=weak IM
I think that he meant sb that's at least 2400+

i am around 2000ish playing strength and no way in hell i'd do this and i doubt that 2200 players would

i just don't believe that 2200 guy would beat Carlsen or Topi even w/ knight advantage seriously(even though it is quite of a handicap at those levels)
also the time controls would be very important the shorter the game the tougher it would be

I'd take your prop bet all day long. 2200 player is favored with knight odds versus anyone in a slow game. I found this interesting and played a few computer games at rapid speed. Was very easy to win. Avoiding complex positions is quite easy when up a knight.

Yeah now just find 2800 player that we ll agree to play this out =]

Against what engine did you play?

He thinks 1800 against 2400 with knight odds is about even, and 2400 against 3400 with knight odds would be even, so based on that he would have 2200 as a big favourite over 2800.
