I don't know much about chess, but I have really enjoyed this tournament so far. Such exciting games and the Fabiano-MVL game yesterday was superb imo.

Really interesting bishop sacrifice by Magnus today even though it didn't ultimately work out. Seemed like he might have been off his game a bit based on his post-game interview.

I'm really enjoying this too even though the chess is mostly over my head ldo. Great format that seems to encourage the players to take chances.

Nonzero chance Magnus actually reads this.

He's played online poker and surely knows of twoplustwo.

exciting tourney so far...and i am looking forward to the rest

but i wanted to comment on the broadcast on Chess.com: I think the live stream coverage is best of any chess tourney on the net...

the producers seem to have borrowed from other programming to create their broadcast style

Maurice Ashley using ESPN/MLB.com techniques to give game analysis--short and energy filled: its the strongest part of the coverage...

and Jen Shahade / Yasser Seirawan team smacks of Fox News style pairing of an old man with a pretty young woman;

little fluff filler pieces by the field/sideline reporter...

in short, formats we've seen before but not applied to chess broadcasts

Maurice Ashley can be great.

The bishop will operate with PINCER-LIKE EFFECT.

Actually, Fabiano has already become no. 1 in rapid chess, both currently and all-time, as a result of the Dubai championship (2858 vs Carlsen's 2855). He took the first spot in rapid at Zurich in March 2014, overtaking Magnus, who is now not even at the personal high point, which was 2856 after the rapid championship in Astana in August 2012.

Edit: even if we assume that, before the introduction of blitz and rapid ratings, they were equal to classical chess ones (as it was set for active players at the moment of the intro), Fabiano's 2858 is still the highest, beating Kasparov's good old high point of 2856.7.

If he reads it, I'd be more than happy if he wanted to fly me out there and take me to lunch so that I could apologize for calling him Magnutard.

That'd only be comparable to fox news if Jen and Yasser were ****ing ******ed, which they're not. Plus Jen has been pretty active in a lot of various methods of promoting chess, so it's not like they're taking a Miss America contestant and being like "hey let's listen to this completely unqualified person's opinions on welfare and black presidents!"

A couple years ago I always got the feeling that she tried to make herself seem bad at chess on these broadcasts, but that's basically gone now. Now there's just tons of good content from both of them.

And lots of corny jokes.

Caruana 4.0/4. Standard.

Holy Jeebus Caruana. What's the current record for "best tournament performance in chess history"? I need to know what I'm comparing him to (assuming he draws or loses a couple games eventually - otherwise of course there's nothing to debate).

On chessbomb they're saying Fabiano's performance rating is up to 3804. Fabiano's game score against Levon is scary. It's just 50 moves with 0 errors, until Levon falls apart.

BobJoeJim, the highest one I'm aware of was Magnus at Nanjing 2009 which was "only" 3002.

Every game of Caruana's I've reviewed with Stockfish is completely packed with top-three suggestions, even more so than any other top GM.

Maybe one of the Fischer candidates evaluations will give a decent performance rating

I googled that up and I see multiple sources saying his performance rating in 1971 was 3060.

I didn't just mean performance rating, I meant "performance" qualitatively. Fischer candidates is probably a contender.

The "Intrinsic Performance Rating" study estimated Fischer's accuracy in the 1971 matches to be equivalent to roughly a 2921 modern rating. (not counting openings of course). Capablanca in the 1927 tournament had 2936.

I would like to see this compared to Caruana's accuracy in this tournament.

I saw all of the first two rounds, then I saw Carlsen v Caruana round 3. That's it so far. I'm shocked that Caruana won 3 in a row against these players. What a beast.
