2014 Chess Olympiad - Tromso - Chess and Board Game Strategy

The 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway begins on August 1st (opening ceremony, first round is Saturday, August 2nd) and runs until August 14th. Here is a link to the event webage.

As usual, this should be very exciting. Can't wait for it to start.

Collection of random thoughts...

-Sam Shankland is making his debut at the Olympiad for the USA. I'll be watching his games closely, he always prepares nicely for big events.
-2+2 poster QuantumCage (IM Vilka Sipila) is playing for Finland.
-BJJ, Wei Yi is playing for China.
-Russia's team has an average rating of 2767. Yikes.
-Anyone here have any friends playing?

Fun fact: Vietnam has four (!!) Nguyen's in their men's team. Also one female Nguyen, too.

Fun fact 2: gotta love how Russia always gets whatever the hell they want. Not only is their female team allowed to participate, but they also have Lahno. This entire ordeal reeks so hard of corruption I can't even describe it in words..

I heard about the part where their female team shouldn't have been allowed to participate, but what is the part about Lahno?

I wish some country could beat the men's team, but I just don't see it happening. They're so outrageously strong.

Lahno changed federation to join Russia. Her application wasn't going to be done in time, so they held off naming their team till after the deadline. The Norwegian organisers initially refused to accept Russia's late entry.

Obviously Russian corruption, etc., but I think what happened is within the spirit of the rules. Lahno certainly shouldn't be allowed play for Ukraine at this Olympiad, so would you disqualify her altogether? Another reasonable approach would have been to let Russia name her on the team from the start, with the understanding that if her change of federation application was not approved, she would not be allowed to play.
