A little bit of redemption from my terrible game last week, with quick-impression annotations:

[Event "Team 45 45 League T43"]
[Site "Internet Chess Club"]
[Date "2009.11.14"]
[Round "3"]
[White "FrostDragon"]
[Black "DaMaGor"]
[Result "0-1"]
[WhiteElo "1763"]
[BlackElo "1973"]
[Opening "Dutch with c4 & Nc3"]
[ECO "A87"]
[Time "19:37:11"]
[TimeControl "2700+45"]

1. d4 {0:45:42} f5 {0:45:40} 2. c4 {0:46:25} Nf6 {0:46:22} 3. Nc3 {0:47:08}
d6 {0:46:44} 4. Nf3 {0:47:47} g6 {0:47:22} 5. g3 {0:48:21} Bg7 {0:48:04} 6.
Bg2 {0:49:05} O-O {0:48:38} 7. O-O {0:49:49} Qe8 {0:49:20} 8. d5 {0:50:32}
Na6 {0:50:01}

All book so far. 7...Qe8 is one of my favorite moves at the chessboard, so I like that I get to play it regularly, unlike most great moves. It adds support for play on the kingside and queenside as well as in the center.

9. Be3 {0:51:00}

I think this move is bad. It seems doubtful that attacking a7 will be a productive plan, and the bishop obstructs the advance of the e-pawn. White has plenty of other good options, including Rb1, Nd4, and Re1.

9...Bd7 {0:48:24}

Not seeing anything more effective, I decided to just continue development.

10. h3 {0:50:57}

Unnecessarily weakening; I was never planning on Ng4 because White would answer with Bd4.

10...h6 {0:46:56} 11. Nd4 {0:48:15} g5 {0:44:57} 12. Kh2 {0:44:30}

On 12. Ne6, I intended 12...Bxe6 13. dxe6 c6. 12. Kh2 is a bad idea, because it just makes it easier to attack the kingside, but White is already worse. I'm not sure what to suggest.

12...Qh5 {0:40:08} 13. f3 {0:41:43}

But this just totally weakens White's kingside and continues to do nothing productive.

13...f4 {0:31:28} 14. gxf4 {0:41:04}

If 14. g4, 14...Bxg4 wins at least a pawn while greatly weakening the kingside.

14...Bxh3 {0:31:08} 15. fxg5 {0:40:52} Bxg2+ {0:30:29} 16. Kxg2 {0:41:29} Ng4 {0:30:33}

A double clearance move (for the f8-rook and the g7-bishop) which also threatens mate on h2.

17. Bg1 {0:40:02}

17. fxg4 Qxg4+ 18. Kh2 (18. Kh1 Qh3+ 19. Kg1 Qxe3+ and 20...Bxd4) Be5+ is winning for Black as well.

17...Be5 {0:26:51} 18. e3 {0:36:14}

Missing the threat, but White is lost anyway.

18...Nxe3+ {0:27:21}

Winning the queen or giving mate.

{White resigns} 0-1

40. Ke2 Kxe5 41. Ke3 Ra3+ 42. Kf2 Kf4 43. Ke2 e5 0-1

15. h3 is known to be weak because of the ...Bxd4 idea.

I wasn't sure if I should play 18...Nxd4 instead. I was worried about 19.Rxe7 but maybe it is safer than allowing Qxh6, which I saw was coming. Fritz likes 18...Nxd4 19.Rxe7 Qa3 20.Rb7 Nxf3+ 21.Qxf3 Qxf3 22.gxf3 a5 etc., but white seems to be OK there with 23.Rc1 and Rcc7 next.

I thought he would (and should) play 21.Rfb1 instead of 21.Rc1.

His h4-Rh1-h5 plan seems too ambitious, but maybe because of the "must win" situation of his team, he decided to be aggressive.

28. hxg6 Qg5+ 29. Qxg5 Rxg5+ 30. Kf1 is much better for black, but probably what he should have tried.

After 28. f4 I missed 28... Qxh5! 29. Qxh5 (29. Rxh5 Rxh5 traps the queen) 29... gxh5 30. Ra1 a3 etc.

After 29. hxg6 I would probably have bailed out with a draw with 29...Qg4+ 30. Kf1 Qd1+ etc., although there may be some scary ways to play on with 29...Qxe4+.

The game continuation with 29.e5 just loses since 29...Qg4+ 30.Kf1 Rd5 leads to mate, and the ending after 30.Kh2 is hopeless.

Bad, bad game by me. I was extremely distracted during the game and played like a ******ed walrus. On move 26 I used the standard Kotov method of discarding move A b/c of obv tactics, analyzing move B somewhat deeply then thinking 'Oh, how bout move A' and playing it instantly. Sorry, team.

They really need time penalties for those who show up late, IMO.

Edit: Of course he shows 4 minutes away from forfeiting.

I got revenge:

Plus after sacrificing the exchange he offered a draw four times, which only makes me work a lot harder to find a win.

Now it's up to Dire to at least draw with Black against a 2508.

It's really too bad that you can't just start their clocks and utilize the standard penalty of lost time.

That was a great game, Tim. A+ technique and the observer comments were hilarious. 'Wow! He turned down the draw offer!' 'Again!' lol.

Thanks again. Of course I'm never fully happy with my own games...

I was kind of winging it with 7.a4, instead of the usual 7.Bg5, but I felt my opponent was super booked up. I searched his games beforehand, and saw he played the line 7. Bg5 a6 8. Na3 b5 9. Nd5 Be7 10. Bxf6 Bxf6 11. c3 Ne7. I never did come up with something I like for White there, so I figured I would play 7.a4 and improvise, since I meet 4...e5 5.Nb5 d6 with 6.a4. But of course he played the odd looking 8...Bg4. I knew it was a nice finesse and I was out to sea for a few moves.

I could have played 10.O-O, but the idea of not getting to play Bg5 in a Sveshnikov was alien to me. My position felt really suspect until I got to trade queens, when I was happy again.

I'm pretty happy with this game. My opponent definitely got the better of the opening, but fell apart pretty quick after that starting with 14. .. Bd6?! The ending was interesting and fun. I definitely gave him too much potential counterplay by allowing a dangerous .. h4 at numerous spots but I was worried about playing h4 myself since though I have a big edge I though the opposite bishops would make it very difficult to convert.

Sadly, that was the last game of this season for 101 Man Onslaught. Because our team was in the group with 6 teams (instead of the normal 4) we only get 5 rounds this season. We finished with 2.5 match points out of 5 for clear 3rd in our bracket. TimM was team MVP with 4.5/5 on board 2 (1 round on board 1). I hope everybody had a lot of fun, got to play some interesting games and maybe learned something.
