What's the most significant change in perspective/opinion/belief you've had from reading the old SMP or RGT?

The realization of how common it is that people will fight tooth and nail to cling to a position that is clearly wrong rather than admit it is, which is rather depressing.

I started reading SMP at a pretty formative age (before the SMP-RGT schism), so I'd say my religious beliefs (beliefs about religion?) are at least somewhat influenced by the debates I've read here.

Also, a lot of the old DS threads about applying probability to science/philosophy and how most people don't understand Bayes' theorem got me thinking pretty good.

id have to say my thoughts on free will. i used to believe in it, and now im not so sure, leaning towards there not being any.

and what deorum said...ugh. (edit: although i think ive been guilty of that myself once or twice.)

Honestly, it's that religious people are dumber and/or more stubborn than I had ever imagined.

Perhaps not "significant" changes to these views, but rather coming to a more "significant" understanding of these views.

1) In general, people suck at theology and philosophy. People bring clubs to conversations where scalpels are necessary. Subtleties are lost because people want to gloss over the details.

2) There is nothing new under the sun. Almost everything is just a recycled argument.

3) What is rational is *STILL* a function of what is assumed. And some people simply cannot see past their own assumptions because their thoughts are so deeply embedded in it.

4) It's amazing that anyone can "know" anything at all.

maybe people are just being realistic. this is an internet forum, and a gambling forum at that. if you want to do rigorous philosophy, this is the wrong place.

id rather talk in laymens terms, and keep things as simple as possible than spend pages and pages defining terms. (not to mention the fact that if you really get heavily into semantics you will effectively cut out 95% of the readers from participating in any way.)

This forum presents an entertaining opportunity to observe the slick moves and quick breaks of deceitful midgets in their attempts at rhetorical point-scoring when, as usual, the burden of logical argument proves too much for them.

i havent been here long but i have an opinion of this subforum....if someone were to ask me what my opinion was i would say that just about every thread regardless of the topic ends up to be about the same discussion (god vs no god)

standard i guess

You should consider working on your personality. You come across as very bitter, frustrated, and unhappy.

Be happy. If you are really convinced that God has chosen you for special blessings and eternal life, cheer up a little bit.

Are you part of a cult of Grouchy Christians?

You do sing, don't you?

Seems an unlikely effect of reading RGT. Hopefully you did your due diligence beforehand.

I think you're being a little hard on the theists. Yes, we agree that they have the burden of logically proving the truthfulness of their religion since they are the ones making positive claims... and we agree that they have failed that burden so often rely on pointless meaningless rhetorical points. But to call them deceitful midgets is unwarranted.

My point is that you are one of the worst offenders, when it comes to your listed complaints.
Claiming someone else is projecting just makes it that much better.
I strongly suspect you knew this was what I meant.

meh, mostly from smp type discussions, although some of the posters here have led to me sources outside this forum that led to the eventual decision...
