What is a Christian? What is a Christian?

Since there are so many people who say they are a Christian or were once a Christian I would like to see what people think a Christian is?

If you post what you think a Christian is give some references please as to HOW you came up with your definition of a Christian.

I know this thread will get slammed with funny guys poking fun at Christians but maybe we will also see the differences in what people define and think a Christian is.

There's no objective means of measuring, so we're limited to the definition of "someone who calls themselves a Christian".

I mean, think about it. Every self-proclaimed Christian will say that their version of Christianity is the correct one, and all who disagree with them aren't "true" Christians.

Then we decide to go to the Bible as a source and get to see every believer bend, twist, and cherry-pick words, verses, translations, and interpretations under the pretense of Biblical clarity, and with God backing them up.

What's your definition?

I would agree with Our House here to a large extent on this one. If someone is to call themselves a Christian then the most we can somewhat confidently expect to take from this is that they at least claim to "follow" the teachings of Jesus Christ to some extent.

I must say I resent the arrogance of some members of the Christian community claiming to be "true" Christians and damning other dominations as unworthy and hellbound. This division among Christ's so called follower is very apparent here in Northern Ireland between the Protestant and Catholic communities with fundemental members of each claiming that the other side is so misguided as to be headed for eternal damnation. This attitude was particulary damaging politically during the troubles and these divisions, as you all know, incited sectarian bloodshed on a horrific scale.

The Evangelical Revd and former head of the DUP Ian Paisley was famous for inciting religous hatred between the communities and is a prime example of the dangers of mixing Religion and Politics.

You can feel free to excommunicate your fellow Christians, but I usually just except peoples definitions of themselves.

If you want my true feelings on the matter, there are no Christians you're all just sects of Judaism.
